A final round charge by Phil Mickelson through the cat amongst the pigeons at the 142nd Open Championship. Four birdies in the last six holes saw Mickelson match the low round for the tournament and propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers picked four of the first five players on the leaderboard and a further two players who earned finishing points. LadyPutt may only have had two picks through to the weekend but they earned a 1-2 finish for her, RedRage also had the same 1-2 finish, and those finish points boosted their final position. Mary_S and Davie had strong finishes from their some of their picks with a 2-3 finish and a second place respectively. BlueCoverman had quantity, with three picks finishing in the points, but not necessarily the quality of other finishers with a 3-6-15 finish. SetupDetermines made a determined charge with a 1-3 finish and Low Amateur but it wasn't enough to stop 1GrumpyGolfer who had a 1-3-6 finish to take victory.
Phil's low round earned bonus points for 1GrumpyGolfer, LadyPutt, RedRage, and SetupDetermines. Matthew Fitzpatrick overhauled Jimmy Mullen on Saturday and made certain of the Silver Medal for Low Amateur on Sunday; SetupDetermines earned points for Fitzpatrick. Thomas Bjorn slumped to a final round 80. Sandy Lyle finished in last place. No one picked either Bjorn or Lyle so no points were awarded there.

Not so good scoring for the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers on Saturday, Mary_S was the big mover on moving day courtesy of Sergio Garcia shooting out of the blocks with low round of 68. BlueCoverman also picked up points due to Adam Scott making it into the Top 10 Low Scores. No one else managed anything. Garcia was one of 17 who managed to shoot under par, Hunter Mahan and Richard Sterne also matched Garcia's score of 68. Shiv Kapur had the worse round of the day with an 83.
SetupDetermines is looking very good for 30 extra bonus points as his pick of Matthew Fizpatrick outscored Jimmy Mullen by 2 shots on Saturday.
Over half of the picks left standing are in the scoring points so there could be plenty of points coming towards the Fantasy Leaguers.

An interesting day of scoring at the open as the cut line fluctuated more than the stock market. In this instance it was friendly to a number of GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers who ended the day with more picks through to the weekend than perhaps was previously thought. No one had the full set, the closest were 1GrumpyGolfer, BlueCoverman, and SetupDetermines; they each had four picks. Davie, Mary_S, and RedRage all had three picks and LadyPutt is left with just two picks.
The everchanging cut line meant that just two amateurs made the cut and SetupDetermines is the last Fantasy Leaguer standing and he's looking for the extra 30 points. His amateur, Matthew Fitzpatrick, is left even stevens with Jimmy Mullen as they move into the weekend.
Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel were the best of the 25 players who had rounds of par or better in round 2. They both had 68s. Scott Piercy had a bad day, in fact a really bad day, he was +17 for his round and on the way out of Muirfield. No one picked any of these players so no bonus points were awarded for a second day in a row.
With the Top 10 Low Rounds earning bonus points on Saturday there's hope for Fantasy Leaguers yet.

Old champions seemed to have the better of the scoring after the first round of the Open at Muirfield. Whilst others were moaning about the condition, fairness, and playability of the course Zach Johnson was putting together the best round of the day with a 66. He has a one shot lead over Rafa Cabrera Bello and Mark o'Meara. The Top 5 Low Scores rounded out at 68 and none of the GolfChatUK Fantasy League picks were among those good scores. Amateur Rhys Pugh had the worse round with an 84. Luckily he was not picked in the race for leading amateur. Jimmy Mullen leads the race for leading amateur after a fine round of 71. Grant Forrest and Matthew Fitzpatrick are in joint second and that means some good news for SetupDetermines and RedRage. Garrick Porteous and Ben Stow are in a bit of trouble at +5 and that's not so good for the rest of the Fantasy Leaguers.

The 142nd Open Championship is being held at Muirfield. Unsurprisingly the field is immensely heavy; 49 of the top 50 ranked players are at Muirfield the only absentee is Steve Stricker ranked number 10. In total 89 of the top 100 are playing making Categories A and B very strong. Ernie Els will be back to defend the Claret Jug that he snatched from Adam Scott in more ways than one. Credit to SmithersJones for this little snippet: Ernie is not only the defending champion but he will be defending the 2002 title that he won last time the Open came to Muirfield.
At almost 7200 yards this isn't the longest or shortest course that the players will see on the Open rotation however weather and course conditions will determine whether we have a massacre at Muirfield or whether Muirfield will be murdered.
There are seven amatuers in the field, idenitfied by (Am) after their name, so we will have a separate pick for Low Amateur. Three earned their place by being either: the 2013 Amatuer Champion (Garrick Porteous), the 2012 European Amateur Champion (Rhys Pugh), or the 2012 US Amateur champion (Steven Fox). The four others all came through Local Final Qualifying at Dunbar, North Berwick, and Gullane. Amateurs took two of the three spots from Gullane.
The Low Amateur pick does not have to be one of your Cat C picks unless you so desire. 30 points will be on offer for correctly picking the Low Amateur; if no amateurs make the cut then no points will be awarded.
This is a full field event with cut; cut bonuses will be in effect.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Pick 1 amateur identified by (Am) after their name
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place.
It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

I'm not sure if Setup's comment meant that he didn't read my introduction or he wants 15 in Cat A?
If you get a game Blue what Category should I put you in?

Yes 15 in Cat A, please ?
With a quick scan of the last few tourneys, there has been 15 in Cat A for piddly little tournaments.
With a weighted 3 tourney, Cat A needs increasing, not decreasing, surely.

Please no! It's hard enough picking 2 or 3 from 14 without having another one!

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 –Summer/Autumn Session - Event #01 - The Open Championship
Ah, get where you're coming from Setup however, it's not a fixed number for each category. I try to fit each category into nice numbers so top 15, then those within top 100, and then the rest. There may have been other events where there were 15 in category A but that's just how the numbers lay. In the last event I chose those inside the top 60. If I had gone to those that were top 50 then there would only have been 11 choices and that's too small, in my opinion. Hope that makes sense?

As this is The OPEN, surely it should be hard ??
& weighted 3 in your categorization, so the one offering the mist points if successful.

After last week's dismal failure, here goes:
Cat A: Justin Rose & Phil Mickelson (res Sergio Garcia)
Cat B: Matteo Manassero & Henrik Stenson (res David Lynn)
Cat C: Marc Warren & Robert Karlsson (res Nick Faldo)
Amateur: Garrick Porteous
Grumps - I will be away the following week, so please pick numbers 2 and 7 in each category for me. It actually means I will miss most of The Open (and the second Test match) too - I leave for Italy on Friday

That was poor planning LP, I speak from experience having missed the US Open in the same vein. Any number for a reserve just in case one is needed?

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 –Summer/Autumn Session - Event #01 - The Open Championship
I would prefer Sky to do the coverage (as their commentators and presenters are much more interesting and informed than the BBC's - who on earth is that boy they had at the beginning this morning?) but at least the BBC is doing unbroken coverage from 9am to 8pm today - not sure about the rest of the 4 days as I will be away . I'd just prefer not to have Ken Brown, Hazel Irvine, "the boy" and Sam Torrance although I can just about put up with Peter Alliss in small doses. Even with the adverts, I prefer Sky's coverage.Davie wrote:No TV coverage until 9am tomorrow. This is why I wish Sky could take the deal off the BBC
And I forgot the ghastly Maureen Madill!

Only one Fantasy League amateur has a chance to make the cut at his own hand. Garrick Porteous has 6-7 holes to pick up 2-3 shots to make sure he stays for the weekend. Will still need to play pretty well to catch Jimmy Mullen who has just started his second round.

Still not finished but looking like +8 will now be the cut
Luke Justin and Coco all finished and will be wearing their weekend outfits around the clubhouse (or on the plane back to America)
Lee Westwood only one off the lead (and tied with Tiger and Stenson) .. I may not have picked Lee but I'd sure love to see him win it
