This will be the 112th U.S. Open Championship played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. The event was also staged there in 1955 when Jack Fleck beat Ben Hogen in an 18 hole playoff to win the championship. The following is an excerpt written by Robert Trent Jones for Sports Illustrated magazine which previewed the course before the start of the tournament:

"The Olympic Gets An Overhaul"

"There are several characteristics that make the Olympic Club, the venue of the 1955 Open, different from the courses on which the championship has recently been held. For one thing, the holes are completely tree-lined. Compared to Merion, Oakmont and Baltusrol its greens are small. Only 6,700 yards long, the course is the shortest on which the Open has been held during the last five years. Nevertheless, it does possess a high percentage of long and testing holes and should prove a thorough examination in golf."

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

It's quite colorful at the top of the Fantasy League leaderboard after Round 1 in the U.S. Open: Redrage and BlueCoverman respectively hold the top 2 positions. Redrage had the audacity to choose Michael Thompson who stole the show with a -4 on the San Francisco course. This helped him to a total of 90 points with BlueCoverman at 60. Six other competitors were one stroke back at 30 points each and the remaining six are still in the clubhouse with nothing to show.

As not everyone selected an amateur due to an oversight by a League Administrator, there will be no official points awarded for the low amateur in the tournament but a separate Amateur Leaderboard will take form for this tournament with the eventual winner(s) holding bragging rights that can be used as ammunition for future arguments and storytelling.

Patrick Cantlay seemed to be the popular choice while 4 others each selected a different amateur. Faldono1fan with Beau Hossler as his choice is currently in first as Beau shot a fine even par and is tied for seventh in the tournament after Round 1.

A number of Fantasy Leaguers were thanking their lucky stars as a very high cut line at +8 allowed a number of their selections to slide through to the weekend. But it still wasn't enough to stop the bleeding of others as their Category A choices of Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy inexplicably failed to make the cut.

Redrage is the leader at the halfway point and was thwarted from sending all six picks to the weekend by also having picked Luke. Likewise, the man currently in 2nd with 120 points, hogie failed perfection due to picking Coco. The only other to have had 5 of 6 selections make the cut, boyhyde, took it on the chin from Peter Lawrie.

An interesting situation again occurred in the Amateur Category. Mary_S moved into 2nd place because her choice of Hunter Hamrick was the low amateur of the day but also the low player of the round for the entire field. Since Mary_S didn't select Hamrick as one of her A, B or C Category picks, she cannot receive the 30 points for low round. The matter will certainly be looked into following the tournament but for now she receives a pat on the back and that's about it.

Redrage is threatening to run away with the U.S. Open Fantasy League event unlike what's occurring on the actual course at the Olympic Club. Redrage grabbed another 90 points to take a 120 point margin into the last round by having two selections making the Round 3 Top 10 list. His Category A choice of Lee Westwood's Round 3 low score was worth another 30 points. Westwood was the most popular selection of the day for those GCUK Fantasy Leaguers who moved up the leaderboard. Nobody chose Stephen Ames who shot the worse round of the day worth 30 points.

On the Amateur Leaderboard faldono1fan is holding on to a slim lead with his choice, Beau Hossler, while Redrage pulled into 2nd place with his choice of Andrew Spieth getting 10 points for shooting low amateur score of the day. The group bunched up with their choice of Patrick Cantlay is floundering in 4th and Davie with Alex Zhang did not make the weekend.
