Sunday is the start of the working week in Dubai and the players put a workmanlike finish to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. There was none of the low scoring that we had seen earlier in the week. The low round was a -5, 67; the worse round was a +6, 78. Scoring by the leading players at the top of the field was a mixed bag and the final four players were only -6 between them.

It was also a mixed bag for the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers, only five of the picks made it into a top 20 finish. 1GrumpyGolfer led the way with three of his picks earning points but he could only tie Davie's finish points total. The pick of Lee Westwood ultimately made the difference between them; Davie picked him and 1GrumpyGolfer was taken ill by LPRPitis. Congratulations to Davie for achieving his second win in close succession.

RedRage maintained his fine form with a third place finish, perenial sufferer LadyPutt finished in midtable after leaving Richard Sterne on the bench. BlueCoverman and SetupDetermines had so so finishers and SetupDetermines was unable to keep the last place to first place run going. Doc and Mary_S had nine picks between them and saw only one finish in a scoring position.

The bonus points for the last round went begging; Marcus Fraser, Ricardo Santos and Marc Warren had 67s. Chris Doak, Jbe' Kruger and Eddie Pepperell had 78s. Jaco Van Zyl finished in last place and those points were also left on the table.

The next event sees the GolfChatUK Fantasy League travel to South Africa for the Joburg Open where we hope to meet up with Steve Surry he's in the Monday qualifying.

A mixed bag of scoring today in the third round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The scoring average was just under 70 or -2 under par. The low round score was -10 and the worse round score was +5. Stephen Gallacher holed out of the back bunker on the last to finish with 62 and a 3 shot lead over first round 62 scorer Richard Sterne.

The top 10 low scores stood at 67 and only two of the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguer's picks made that mark and Davie had both of them; Lee Westwood, had a 66, and Thorbjorn Olesen who shrugged off a three putt on 16 to birdie the last for a 67. His decision to pick both means that he joins Doc atop the leaderboard. Both of those players were popular picks and RedRage, 1GrumpyGolfer, LadyPutt and BlueCoverman all improved their points but not their placings. Doc, SetupDetermines and Mary_S did not improve anything.

The worse round of the day was from Thomas Levet, he shares last place with Tom Lewis just 20 shots behind the leader. No one picked Levet so those bonus points went begging.

There are four picks in the top 20 and 1 who is close to last place; is this where SetupDetermines will keep the last to first run going?

Woohoo! Points are scored, dreams are made and hopes dashed after the second round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Kudos to Doc for getting all six of his picks through to the weekend and earning a GolfChatUK Fantasy League bonus. This bumper points haul ensured a lead at the top of the leaderboard. RedRage and LadyPutt narrowly missed matching Doc; they fell 1 pick short and in RedRage's case 1 shot short. The rest had two picks fall by the wayside except Mary_S who lost half of her team.

Rounds of the day were shared by Thorbjorn Olesen, Jbe' Kruger and David Horsey. They all shot 66s and in Horsey's case it was very much needed. He made the cut on the number thanks to his great round today. Low round bonus points were awarded to 1GrumpyGolfer, RedRage and Davie who all chose Olesen. No one else chose any of these players although if Davie and Mary_S hadn't fell victim to LPRPitis their Cat C picks would have been much better with Hosey in their side. The worse round was accumulated by Emiliano Grillo, his +7, 79 saw him fall from a promising position on day 1 to missing the cut. No one picked him either so those points were left on the table.

Round 3 is moving day and scoring day in the GolfChatUK Fantasy League. Can anyone catch Doc? Will SetupDetermines bounce back and keep the run of last to first going?

The first day of play at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic saw some remarkable scoring. What did this mean for GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers; absolutely nothing. More points get awarded to Norway on Belgium in a Eurovision Song Contest than after round 1. The good news is everyone is tied first, the bad news is everyone is tied last too. That sound you can hear is LadyPutt sobbing gently into her elderberry cordial as she left Richard Sterne on the bench. He had the round of the day, a -10, 62. The worse rounds of the day were shared by Peter Erofejeff, Matthew Baldwin and Faycal Serghini. They all scraped round in 76.

The cut mark is already on -2 so some low scores are needed for some picks to progress.

NOTES:
Due to weakened field for this event the Tournament Value is now: Weighted 1
Rankings are from week 3 not 4 due to the delayed finish to the Farmers Insurance Open. Chris Wood’s ranking is off by about 80 places; regardless he remains in CAT B.

Lee Westwood makes his debut on the 2013 European Tour this week. He headlines a field of very few top ranked players in Dubai. Chris Wood is in the field fresh off of his maiden victory in Qatar. Mark O’Meara was a recipient of a sponsor’s invitation and Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal are also in the field.

The course is a lopsided par 72, at a fraction over 7300 yards; expect to see scores improved on the inward half due to the increased number of par 5s.

Full field event, cut bonuses are in effect.

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

The next event sees the GolfChatUK Fantasy League travel to South Africa for the Joburg Open where we hope to meet up with Steve Surry he's in the Monday qualifying.

That chunk into the water at the 18th by Westwood cost me (and others) a few points. It was a strange week with very high scores but not, in general, by the players we thought would do well.
