A few weeks ago was the 70th anniversary of the first 1,000 bomber raid by the RAF which was codenamed Operation Millennium. Cologne was chosen as the target and the raid took place on the night of 30/31 May 1942. Excerpt from wikipedia:
"A headline-grabbing heavy raid on Germany was a way for Bomber Command AOC Arthur "Bomber" Harris to demonstrate to the War Cabinet that given the investment in numbers and technology Bomber Command could make a vital contribution to victory.
At this stage of the war RAF Bomber Command only had a regular front line strength of around 400 aircraft, and were in the process of transitioning from the twin engined medium bombers of the pre-war years to the newer more effective four-engined 'heavies'. However, just before the raid took place, the Royal Navy refused to allow the Coastal Command aircraft to take part in the raid. The Admiralty perceived the propaganda justifications too weak an argument against the real and pressing threat of the U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic. Harris scrambled around and, by crewing 49 more aircraft with pupil pilots and instructors, 1,047 bombers eventually took part in the raid, two and a half times more than any previous raid by the RAF.
In the raid, 868 aircraft bombed the main target with 15 aircraft bombing other targets. The total tonnage of bombs dropped was 1,455 tons with two-thirds of that being incendiaries. RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 - Summer Session - Event #24 _ BMW International Open
Venice,
Please note that I want to give some other people a chance to win some events, so I have decided to get married and go on honeymoon next week in order to miss a big chunk of events.
This means my winning streak will well and truly come to an end. I have posted selections on the summer schedule thread as a damage limitation exercise.
I did think about posting selections while on holiday, but hopefully I will have other things to keep me busy.
Cheers!

Wow! Congratulations to you and your lovely soon-to-be wife.
That's a heavy price to pay to jeopardize your Fantasy League current standing. Well, the rest of us might as well pile on and take advantage of this slight window of opportunity.

Did anyone else watch the highlights of the LET event from Switzerland last night? Tano Goya was caddying for his girlfriend Carly Booth who won after a 3-way play-off! That must be a match made in heaven

Especially for Ray:-
A man is getting married, and is standing by his bride at the church. Standing by him are his golf clubs and bag. His bride whispers, "What are your golf clubs doing here?" And the man said, "This is not going to take all day, is it?"

Round 1 is in the books with four receiving 10 points each for a selection making the Round 1 Top 5 category: Redrage and BlueCoverman with Paul McGinley while Faldono1fan and 1GrumpyGolfer went with Chris Wood. All other Fantasy League competitors struck out and have zero points. The main reason for the low scoring round was that there were only 5 pro's shooting the low 5 scores plus ties as the low mark for the day was at -7.
Nobody chose the two who shot the worse round of the day at +9: Björn Stromsky and Anton Kirstein. There's certain to be some mad scrambling for making the cut tomorrow as -2 is the current line with a very likely turn towards two to three strokes even lower at the conclusion of Friday's round. The tournament appears to be headed towards another GCUK Fantasy League Weighted 1 event that's labeled as hard work with low pay.

Grrrr - part of my new strategy is to stop picking golfers because they come from the West Country, and Chris Wood then decides to show a bit of form and is currently in the top 10!

I hope Wood follows the same routine as yesterday Mary; he ran the last 2 miles to the course with clubs in hand as he was stuck in traffic.

Where is your loyalty Mary? I have stuck with him through thick & thin. He has had some reasonable finishes lately. A solid second round of 70 should set him up nicely for the weekend.

That's what happens when one configures the League Table using QuickBooks software' EZ Form templates, it always wants to grant the automatic savings due to tax deductions. Hope the IRS doesn't catch on as the calculations are made on this side of the pond.

Oooh look at you sucking up to the league administrator
As my missus says "I may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb". I don't get it myself but if he's going to deduct points anyway I may as well feel like I've earned the deduction
I thought she said "I wish you were well hung"
Get your mind out of the gutter Blue
But no worries on that score

Yes apologies for that lapse in standards Grumps, it seemed mildly amusing when I wrote it!

Redrage and faldono1fan now share the halfway lead at the GCUK Fantasy League BMW Open, each with 35 points followed closely by 1GrumpyGolfer who's nailed down the three spot. After that, it's a mad world of seven tied for fourth and four are holding down the fort with 20 points each. No less than seven competitors had 5 of 6 selections make the cut which translates into a knockdown affair Sunday afternoon. Martin Kaymer was the big reason why several never had a perfect score for cuts made. That category is becoming more elusive with each unfolding event.
hogie was the only one to score any category points with his selection of Joel Sjöholm who tied Matthew Nixon for low score of Round 2. Nobody selected Kenneth Ferrie or Benjamin Miarka, both of whom carded high scores for the day with an impressive +11. SetupDetermines had the gutsiest Category C picks making the cut with his selection of Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, both of whom have seen better days before the turn of the century.

Thanks for the update Venice
It started out so promisingly and then Chris Wood leads me down the garden path and I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, he could get me a win. But then as my hopes start to rise and I'm feeling good he starts to get a little flaky, he won't return my texts, emails or calls and then disaster strikes he can't score and I'm left in mid table obscurity. I just don't know if I'm ever going to be able to trust him again.

You think that's bad? I had Hunter Mahan in my Yahoo fantasy league for the first three rounds. Dropped him for round four and he shot a 61(?)

So you are stalking Chris Wood now?...be ashamed Grumps, be very ashamed!
