Re: Tell us about your game today...
Shot a 1 under 71 today (it was off the yellow tees) to win Captains Day with 42 points. Won't bore you but I managed to birdie 3 of my 5 shot holes so had three 4 pointers on the card...never had that before.
But more impressively I managed to get all 6 picks through the cut before in the Fantasy League...never had that before either!

Hey BC, maybe you should hit the track this weekend and bet your savings. What could go wrong?

Good work BCM - very satisfying and if my own experiences are anything to go by, Captain's day is a really nice one to do well in
Re: Tell us about your game today...
Like a lot of us no doubt, torrential rain has mean't no golf today as the greens became unplayable. Only bonus was that we hadn't started as our tee time was 9.48am and the course was closed just before that. Unlike those who had been out there a couple of hours and came off extremely wet and unhappy!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Played yesterday and started out really well, pared the first five holes including getting up and down twice, once from a bunker too. Dropped a shot on 6 and then went on a run of double, eagle, double, bogey, triple. Then went on a run of 5 straight pars before dropping a shot on 17 after hitting a crap wedge at the green. Parred 18 and was amazed when I added it up that I shot 78. got nearest the pin on 14 for a bit of a bonus too. I really wish I counted that for the eclectic

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Just got back from a weeks holiday in Yorkshire, where I actually got 5-rounds in. Although the important games were over this last weekend as we have an anual family golf weekend, where bragging rights and trophy is at stake. This has normally been played in shorts and blazing sunshine, but this joke weather put paid to that, but suppose we were lucky to be able to play Saturday and Sunday.
Due to tee off Saturday morning at Whitby GC, but after driving over the sunny moors, we decended into a fog shrouded Whitby. The GC car park was empty as the course was closed for H&S reasons (Cliff tops) The pro said the club had lost a fortune recently due to closures and even though the weather was pleasant all around Whitby, the fog wouldn't clear for at least 2-days unless the wind/rain picked up. So desperatley trying for alternative venue and got sorted at Kirby Moorside. The course was lucky to be open as it was boggy in many areas and of course getting any run was out of the question. The best score of the day was 32 points, so thats how garbage the play was and yours truly was 2nd bottom with a grand total of 23-points (Gutted) Sunday was another struggle trying to find anywhere available as our course of choice was closed due to a rearranged club comp that was cancelled on Saturday due to rain and flooded greens. Manged to play the spare 9-holes at Malton GC as the other 18-holes were solid due to a medal. After playing holes 1 to 9 twice, and golf being just as bad as the day before for all, it turned out I won the day with a huge 31-points, which combined with my 23 from the previous day saw me take the trophy on count back. 54-points for 36 holes must be a record winning low score. No hackers involved in the event, just a lot of frustrated golfers struggling around on gloopy tracks, rough that was soaked and not seen the greenkeeping staff for a week due to conditions, lost balls on fairways due to plugging. My nephew who played really well on Saturday scoring his 32-points had a mare struggling home with only 19-points yesterday to finish last.
So a good weekend but crap golf in terrible conditions and quite surreal at times, especially Whitby

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Why, oh, why, oh, didn't I nominate today for the eclectic? Took my birthday off for some golf and went out this afternoon with one of the really good golfers in the club.
The front nine, 3 pars, 3 doubles and 3 birdies. Drained some long putts and chipped in, only one bad swing really on that nine. Back nine started strong just missing out on a birdie, birdie start. Missed a good chance to make par on 12 and then had two bad swings in a row on 13. But still had a good chance to make par but missed again. Made two nice pars on the back to back par 3s. Should have saved par on 16 after finding the green side bunker. Made easy par on 17 and then had a three footer squirt right on me. Finished with a 75 and beat him by 1. Boy was he pissed!m

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Decided to go for a game today despite the weather. I'd arranged a 4-ball with my regular playing partner and a few weeks ago I'd invited a couple of mates for a game; last time I invited them it pissed down so badly we had to walk off after 9 and I was seriously worried it would happen again - didn't want to wish that on them though as they have to pay full (guest) green fees which while they are cheaper than visitor fees, it's still not nice for them to have to stump up that much cash for a weather affected round
Anyway, as I was driving to the club there was a major downpour and the the course had apparently been borderline playable - we were starting off the 10th to give the wetter front nine time to dry out and I can't believe how lucky we were to even finish. VERY wet underfoot on the fairways though the greens held up nicely - we got very lucky to play 18 holes with only a couple of minor showers.
Only played off the yellows with the guests so couldn't nominate an eclectic round - ended up with 34 pts which in the conditions I wasn't too annoyed about (that included a nasty 3 putt from about 2 feet - hit a firm 1st putt that went about 4 foot past after catching the edge of the hole and missed the one back too)
Highlight was a birdie on the 3rd (par 5) - not one I can reach in two but a nice 8 iron to about 4 ft and sank the putt (for a half!) - at the standard I play to, a par would usually win it. That was a great matchplay hole actually - my mate put his 3rd to about 8 ft (he almost holed it on the way past) and I was so pleased to get inside it; he sank his putt and my 4 footer suddenly doubled in length!
Ended up losing on the last green but it was a great match

Re: Tell us about your game today...
I actually managed to get out on the course on Sunday - the first time I've not had something else to do or it has been pissing down with rain on a weekend since Easter!
I was pleased with my drives (apart from one ) but my short game let me down and I was struggling to get the pace of the greens. But it was great to get out and the course, surprisingly, was only a bit soggy in one or two places. Now I suppose we'll have a dry weekend this coming weekend when the Open is on Thank goodness for Sky+

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Nice little casual game today - no match, no competition, just me and a guy I know from my local pub who has been playing for years but with no ambition to play in any contests or comps - he just likes to go out there for the walk and to smack a few balls. He tried to get a handicap a while ago but can't break 100 though he is very close. I tried to talk him around the course but it was clear he really wasn't interested in anything approaching course management - he just wanted to go for every shot even if it was beyond him. Very refreshing actually!
Green staff had done a great job with the course after so much wet stuff recently and the weather behaved for once - a lovely, stress-free afternoon. Didn't play terribly well but I was experimenting with a few things that I didn't expect to come off straight away - would have been just outside my buffer zone had it been a qualifier but that didn't really matter. Nice birdie on 17 though to make my score a little more respectable
Back again tomorrow as I've got a week off work

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Lovely day today and a pleasant surprise for me!
First time out with my new Ping G-15s and shot a nett 70 in the monthly C medal!
Was a little worried about using them first time out in a medal (I'd only had about 45 minutes on the range with them) and I was expecting to take some time getting used to new yardages (certainly hitting them further than my old irons) but it all went very well! Only couple of bad shots were "thinning" a couple of 3/4 wedge shots, but everything else went remarkably well!
Nett 70 (CSS 70) was enough for 3rd place (beating my mate on countback into 4th) - sadly no cut but quite a promising start with them

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Nice going Davie
Was lovely out there this morning, course had dried up really well after being pretty saturated last weekend. 34 points for me this morning, played pretty steady and scored every hole. 1 birdie, 10 pars, 6 bogeys and one double after a pushed second into rough a foot high. Oldparwin wouldn't like to play here at the moment, not with the length of the rough, but then I thought he only hit it straight up the middle!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Know what you mean about the rough, Blue - I think it's the weather we've had that has just meant it's gone crazy. Our place let the rough grow up a couple of weeks ago for the Club Champs (which is fair enough) but with how wet it's been they just haven't been able to get it back to something like "normality"
I was fortunate enough to stay out of it today hence my score - had one drive that I thought was in deep trouble and hit a provisional but fortunately I got lucky the first ball got into just the semi-rough - which still cost me a bit of a hack-out but at least I found it and wasn't 3 off the tee
At least we don't have any huge forced carries - I'm quite capable of hitting wild left or right and that can be costly, but fortunately not today - it's the big forced carries that really make courses unfair

Re: Tell us about your game today...
As mentioned on the Open thread, I've been back at the club today for a "fun" event - the days was the "hogroast cup" made up of 4BBB matches with teams playing for the captain or vice-captain.
Some unrest from some of the members (particularly the lower handicappers) - the event was organized by the pro-shop and for some reason they decided it was to be off full handicap despite being 4BBB matchplay.
I've never heard of 4BBB being played off full difference and even questioned it in the pro-shop before the day started but they assured me that was the idea (being a "fun" event I assume they could make up whatever rules they liked)
I played with an ex-lady captain against a married couple where the lady in our opposing team was the lower handicap - she was off 9 but getting 2 courtesy (or should I be politiically correct and call them) equalization shots
My handicap is 22 so I was getting 11 shots; her husband and my partner were both getting only one or two shots
Apart from totally nobbing my opening tee shot (off the 10th) into a little ditch just in front of the ladies tee, much to the amusement of the assembled crowd, I played the first nine really well and after 10 holes we were 4 up - my partner being a great help but mostly down to my play and the shots I was getting.
The second nine we wilted and were all square up the last - a wild tee shot from me out of bounds into the carpark meant my partner was on her own but she just missed the green to the left in 2 and chipped to about 3 foot. The low handicap lady opponent was just short of the green in two but slightly overhit her chip to about 6 foot. She missed, and my partner sank her 3 footer for a win
As it happened the 2 or 3 extra shots I got for it being full difference rather than 3/4 actually made little difference to the result but if I had a pound for every time I heard her complain about the handicapping afterwards in the bar it would keep my bar tab healthy for some weeks!
Our team lost overall but it was nice to be one of the winners (and the new irons are still behaving themself!)

Re: Tell us about your game today...
So this afternoon I went out with the same guy I've been playing with recently.
Bit hot out there and I was sweating like a glass blowers arse by the time we teed off. Front nine I was either good and made par or bad and made double. Made a couple of bombs on 8 and 9. Ended up 8 over.
Played relatively steady and made another bomb on 13 for par. Was hitting the ball nicely and was only 3 over as I stood in the middle of the fairway on 16. Made a mess of the shot, hit a great provisional; isn't that always the way? Found it deep in the trees, hacked out, then missed green and eventually holed a putt for a 6. My partner made a mess of the hole, made a snowman and allowed me to close the gap to 1 shot. We went to 17 and he had another 'mare; two wild hacks in a hazard, took a drop, missed green, got on and three putted for a nine! I holed another bomb for a 3 and a commanding five shot lead. Both made regulation pars on 18. Finished that nine in 39 and a one over handicap 82

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Played in a mixed open at Vale Royal Abbey yesterday and had a nightmare front 9. Although I hit some good shots, I managed to be as unlucky as ever, as I caught fiarway bunkers and had to chip a couple from behind trees sideways. The back 9 was much better as I started off par, birdie, par and we scored quite well, but overall I wasn't firing on all cylinders.
Great track but long, and having 3/4 handicap made it tougher, especially playing from the tips, on a damp course and in a 2-club wind.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Well my first round of the year was very pleasant indeed. Lovely day, played a lot of rubbish but a lot of decent shots as well so cant complain. They guy I played with is off 5 and we played at Rockcliffe where he is a member and he gave me a shot a hole matchplay and we had an honourable draw with nobody ever more thaqn a hole ahead.
Its the 5th time Ive played the course and I like it more every time, staff are so friendly, for an elite club in fantastic nick there is not a single sign of any airs and graces. Id strongly recomend anyone who is in the north east to play there, fantastic golf facility and they do a great burger.

A better round yesterday - I seem to be making progress at last. If it hadn't been for the snowman (eight) on one hole where I misjudged a pitch over a bank (I thought it was narrower than it was and ended up on the top, then fluffed two more as I tried to play a delicate shot to a violently downhill green ) it would have been a very good score. Sadly so many other people had had the same idea as us - play a bit earlier so we could get home in time to watch the Open leaders tee off - that it took more than 2 and a half hours to play a 9-hole course! I was losing the will to live towards the end.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Wasn't expecting too much from this morning's game. Haven't touched a golf club since last weekend, had a long stressful week at work and spent every evening with Mum at the hospital.
A blocked drive on the first into the cabbage led to a bogey, quickly followed by 3 more and I walked off the 5th green already 4 over. After that I barely missed a fairway, dropped only 1 more shot and finished with a gross 77 for 36 points and good enough to take the Saturday morning swindle money. Funny old game but it is my birthday!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Cheers Grumps thanks. Scoring was pretty poor yesterday to say the least, as the long rough was too much for some players course management skills. Consequently the standard scratch calculated at a four over par 76. So the even better news was that my nett 72 got me a very nice 0.4 cut down to 4.8 which I am well happy about.
Had a good evening last night celebrating my birthday in Chelmsford, ending up a favourite chinese. And the Mrs paid so I have still got most of that swindle money in my sky rocket!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Good friendly game today (apart from the thunderstorms) - started with a par on a hole I rarely manage that - a touch of luck taking more of a tiger line (not on purpose) down the dogleg left - I knew I'd hit it well but though it had tangled in the trees guarding the dogleg - seems I just avoided the trees and the bunker that sits on the corner and got all the way through to the fairway in a position I've never been in before from the tee! Nice iron to the green and a two putt par gave me a great start. Very steady on the rest of the front nine apart from torrential downpour #1 on the long par 3 8th when I put one in the long stuff and couldn't be bothered to hit a provisional. Rare birdie on 7 and just lipping out for a birdie on 9 gave me an estimated 23 pts for the front nine with one N/S - probably my best points score on front nine for a long time (though we were actually playing matchplay and I was 3 up)
Lost ball on 10 and 3 putts on 11 and 12 brought my back to 1 up but a win on 14 and 15 got me to dormie 3 up and torrential downpour #2 hit - and there was thunder and lightning in the general area though not close enough to bring on the klaxon to clear the course.
At that point I asked my partner what he wanted to do (15th green/16th tee is a good place to walk off) and he graciously conceded the match (he was having a bad day anyway and couldn't face another 45 minutes getting drenched from such a bad position)
I would have liked to see what sort of points score I could have made despite the minor blowout on 10-12 but it was the smart thing to do - we were already on our second pint when the group in front of us finally came to the 18th green!
BTW after the discussion on another thread about my chipping and the new irons, I think it was just lack of practice with them - another two rounds this weekend and I've now got over the problems I was having. Still room for improvement but not the horror show I had chipping last weekend

Much better today, finished with an eagle on the 514 yard 18th. Still fighting a big hook off the tee but managed to sort it out by shortening my swing and not coming over the top. Only 10 stableford points the front 9 (4 blobs), but accrued 19 for the 7 holes (had to skip 2 thanks to 2 slow 4 balls in front) we played on the back 9.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Captain's charity day today so a more relaxed comp and played pretty well - it was a shotgun start and drew a starting hole that wasn't great for me - one of the furthest tees from the clubhouse and starting with 2 or 3 holes that aren't usually too kind to me but I started with 3,2,2,3 points so I was pretty pleased!
4BBB Stableford - off full handicap which is unusual but I scored something like 37 pts with my own ball and me and my partners scored 44 which we thought was pretty respectable - turns out the top 3 pairs all got 48 points and could only be split on countback
Biggest relief was that we didn't lose by one or two points - our last hole was the 14th (a par 3 and one I usually play well) - hit a nice 6-iron to the heart of the green and then proceeded to FOUR putt it when my putting had been pretty sharp all day. I would have been devastated if we'd lose by one or even two points!
New irons are still behaving though - still not got total confidence on striking and yardage with 4- and 5-irons but from 6-iron upwards I'm feeling really confident with them

Re: Tell us about your game today...
After 3 or 4 rounds, today was definitely the day after the Lord Mayor's show
Couldn't hit a cow's ass with a banjo - my regular playing partner who also played well yesterday was almost as bad but took a fiver off me for being not quite so shit
How does this game change so quickly in 24 hours?
The one shining light was our evil 16th hole - a mid-length par 5 but with more hazards than you can shake a stick at and one of the trickiest greens on the course. I'm a bit of a statto saddo in that I keep all my scores in a spreadsheet (some are estimated if it is a matchplay or 4BBB game where I may pick up) but I like to see which are my strong holes and weak holes. As we stood on the 16th tee I mentioned to my playing partners that this season, from May 1st, I hadn't parred the hole and even bogeys were rarities - on a day like I was playing like a total novice, I really feared what I would score. 3 shots later I had a seriously realistic birdie putt which just lipped out and it was a kick-in par.
How does that work? Possibly the worst 18 holes I've played all season yet I get a kick-in par on a hole that has destroyed me all season? I just don't get it ....

Club Championship qualifying rounds taking place this weekend. Went to see my club fitter to check the lofts and lies. Got 'em adjusted another two degrees upright. Went out on the course to practice and seemed to be hitting the ball very solidly. Hope that continues through this weekend

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Very strange day today. A "C" medal and didn't play that well though not awful either, but 3 very bad holes completely ruined it for me
Dropped a shot to handicap on the first 3 holes without ever really playing that badly. One crooked iron shot and a couple of iffy drives but nothing I couldn't recover from yet somehow a shot slipped away on each (I was getting a shot on all 3 holes)
Settled down a little until a FOUR putt on the 6th (the first from long distance was lagged up very nicely then 3-stabbed from about 3 feet
7 and 8 went OK then an inexplicable lost ball on 9 got into my head. We'd all been warned to hit provisionals wherever necessary because of the long rough but I thought I'd nailed a drive and though I thought it had maybe just leaked into the right rough which wasn't that long, there was no sign of the ball. I can only think it had taken a big bounce, not visible from the tee and instead of just being in the light rough, had instead reached a lateral ditch about 15 yards off the fairway. If it had been closely mown, even though no one actually saw it go into the ditch I think I'd have had a decent claim that it was in there within reasonable doubt, but as the semi was a little longer than usual, it could feasibly have just settled in there and as none of us actually saw it into the ditch I had the walk of shame back to the tee - the 3rd off the tee was very definitely wet and I ended up with a 9
Back nine was much more steady and played pretty much to my handicap for 6 holes (despite another ugly 3 putt on 10). Then I reached our dreaded 16th; a mid-length par5 and a rareity for me to get 2 shots on a par 5. However the shot to the green (in regulation) just caught a bunker and 3 shots later I was just on the front edge - chip and 2 putts later and I walked off with another 9
17 wasn't great but no massive damage and finished with a nice par up the last despite misjudging the wind with my shot to the green - end result a net 84 which sounds dreadful but apart from a couple of really loose shots and the lost ball that should never have been and I should have at least been hitting my buffer even though I never really looked like challenging

Monthly medal today, shot a net 68 that's 3 under, but on my last 3holes I shot double bogey, double bogey then bogey, and I got shots on my 2 double bogey holes, think my putter might be on eBay in the next few days.

Monthly medal for me as well this morning. A fairly forgettable round, highlight of which was a birdie on the index one. Two pulled drives on the back nine, both of which led to double bogeys, contributed to a 5 over handicap gross 82 and I suspect nowhere near the buffer zone.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Made the Championship flight after two rounds of 89 and 87 this weekend. Just couldn't get it together. Low lights on Saturday included 5 tee shots on the 16th to eventually get one in play; I found balls 5, 3 and 2. Managed an air shot on the same hole although I was under a tree with brambles tearing up my legs at the time.
Sunday round got off to a great start, I hooked one in the trees and found it only to hack out into the trees on the other side and lose it. Started a good back nine only to lose it on the back to back par 3s at 14 and 15. Felt like I played better on Sunday but just wasn't scoring.
I have a rematch of last year's semi final although we qualified as 2 and 3 not 1 and 4. Should have a better chance this year as he's not playing as well as he was last year. I might lose the will to live as he has a touch of the Sergio's; I counted 15 club presses behind the ball on the 7th tee box, and that's not including the club waggles once he gets comfortable with his grip and feet placement.
Leaving early on Thursday afternoon to get a practice round off the very back tees.

Grumps he's already got you in his pocket mate, by the sound of it He's got to you before the first tee, try and chill and find a way to upset his rythm. Try for the 5 tee shot thing again, because it would work with me

Doc, I've got him for improving his lie on every shot after the tee shot; should be done by the 10th!
I'm hoping not to repeat the five tee shot trick. I think I only lost last year because of the 16th too. I found my ball balancing on a couple of strands of brambles and in moving closer to punch it out I knocked it off causing a one shot penalty Went one down and then lost 17 to lose the match

Re: Tell us about your game today...
So I got an absolute shellacking on Saturday; 6 and 5. Two bad drives on 1 and 2 cost me those holes. Bad approach on 5 cost me another one. He gave away 7 only for me to give away 8. Played 9 really well to win that one. 2 down at the turn, thinking I can get back in this. I then lost the next 4 to lose the match. I didn't play badly over that stretch but he played them in 2 under including chipping in for birdie on the 13 to close it out.

It was obviously to lull me into a false sense of security Blue. He accumulated a high nineties round the other day; bar steward

I weren't bothered about playing him Doc, he's easily 6-7 shots better than me and it was straight up. He bangs it out there a country mile and was hitting silly irons in compared to hybrids for me. He chips and putts well and only missed one putt all day. I didn't even watch him over the ball, just waited for impact and then said good shot.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Never mind grumps. I went out last night to do 9 with a mate and played out of my skin, with a gross 3 over. If my putter had been on it, I would easily have broken par for the 1st time ever. The 3 bogies should all have been pars but 3 putted ffs, and one of those was from 9 foot. Sadly it will all come to an end this weekend when I play over in Yorkshire with a mate. We'll be playing for a few bob, and the pressure we put on each other makes it like a medal round. We all know what I'm like in medals, so normal service will resume shortly.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Not a bad day today - mostly because I felt I came back quite well from an awful start!
Ended with 34 points so should be in my buffer zone and avoid the dreaded 0.1 but it pleased me to come back from such an awful start. Played the first OK for a comfortable nett par, then made a horrible mess of 2 and 3 to NR them both .
2nd was actually a little unlucky though - it's a short par4 dogleg left with a copse of trees guarding the dogleg and a pond in front of the green. My tee shot was too close to the corner and struck a tree quite firmly to shoot WAY left into the copse, but actually left me a shot up the side of the pond to the left edge of the green, where chipping out to the "proper" route would have meant navigating about 30 yards of trees. So I took the left hand route and chipped through to hopefully leave myselfy just off the left of the green. Unfortunately, although I played well away from the pond guarding the front of the green, I struck another tree which kicked the ball 90 degrees right and into the pond!
After that I played the rest of the front 9 pretty much to handicap but only had 13 points to show for it. Back 9 continued the same way as the last 6 of the front nine though - very steady and then started picking up shots to handicap. I needed a par up the par5 last to score 36 points but sadly found a fairway bunker and then 3 stabbed for a 7 - but a total of 34 points which I wasn't too unhapppy with considering the dramas of 2 and 3.
Putting needs a lot of work though - the greens have just had summer maintenance and heavily top-dressed which left them pretty slow and I just couldn't bring myself to hit the ball hard enough - lost count of how many putts I left short!

Well, I am kicking myself at the moment. Shot a gross 80 that included a 10 on our risk/ reward drivable par 4. Straight into wind. Hit slight cut off the tee twice into a field then lipped out for a bogey with me 3rd ball. Best gross in for the comp today was 79.
