My golf course has been closed for over a week now due to the snow and frost, last night we had a temperature of -12, think I will move back to Scotland for the mild winters

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Another fine days golf in balmy SW Scotland. Well it was a bit cold and breezy to start with.
Troon Darley is generally described as a four ball course, meaning that you will probably lose four balls during your round.
Well today I managed to get one ball round without losing it.
But all is not what it appears. It seems that my Calloway ball is an extremely lucky ball as it survived nine visits to the gorse and heather.
Drives were going right and irons going left in a very adventureous game.
Deadly played great, going out in 20 points with a blob {gross43] into a stiffish breeze. He had a 5 point lead at the turn which I gradually whittled down to one at the last tee.
My putt for birdie rimmed out and he hold his 12 footer for par to win by a shot. 34 points to 33.
I think I have used all of my years luck up in one game. Quite exciting though.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Worked from home today and took advantage of the 9 deg weather to get out on to the course for the first time in 3 weeks. Stiff northerly breeze made it feel a little colder, water hazards still frozen solid, and there were still little piles of snow here and there, but it was great to get out and the course was a little soft but in good nick.
Managed to make 3 birdies which was very satisfying as this was down to peppering the pin with accurate approaches. Should have nominated it as an eclectic round
Just great to get out after watching all the golf in the desert on tv recently.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Well as I've completed my Winter Eclectic last weekend I guess I'm relegated to having to post my updates on this thread
First bounce game in about 6 weeks (two weeks missed through bad weather and a couple of "fun" comps).
Quite a sad day today as one of my regular playing partners is going under the knife on Friday for a knee replacement - as I understand it that's a minimum of 6 months out and as he isn't in the greatest of shapes more likely that this will be his last game of 2012
He isn't taking out membership of the club this coming year - that just doesn't make sense but he can play as a guest with us something like 10 times a year at reduced green fees. Hopefully he'll get back to playing but it will be a long haul - does anyone here have any info on recovery from knee replacements? He already has come back from a hip replacement but that was so long ago it could be he needs that redoing!
33 pts for me today was enough to take the cash - a couple of bad holes cost me what could have been a pretty decent score. Dont think I would have improved on the eclectic but I was quite happy with my game in glorious conditions! Never seen greens so fast in February - there was one hole where I had about a 20 foot putt and as I hit it I cursed outloud that I'd mishit it, thinking I'd left it about 6 foot short - it cosied up right next to the hole!

My office manager is having a replacement knee in April Davie...2 weeks off work and 5 to 6 weeks before being able to drive again.
Not sure about playing golf but 6 months seems a long time...one of the guys at my golf club had this operation a couple of years ago and he was back playing sooner than that.

That's encouraging BCM - though as I said he's not the fittest guy in the world - ex-rugby player and his knees and hips are totally shot. He did well to come back to where he is after his first hip replacement but that was so long ago it's starting to deteriorate and may need that doing again soon too.
He's a great guy but TBH I'd be amazed if he plays again in 2012 and that may be long enough that he just doesn't bother after that

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Well I was down in Cambridgeshire visiting family this weekend, so me and the brother in law went to play a strange 9-hole track in Ramsey, in fairly decent weather. The new swing worked wonders on the 177 yard par 3 opeining hole, which I stuck to 5 foot but failed to birdie. Plenty of memorable strokes that got me 7 birdie chances through the round, but only managed one. Couldn't get my driver working yet again, so it put me in trouble a few times, and my short game also failed, so carded a 90 but some of my shots were deserving of a low 80's card.

Had a rather splendid game today with JAS and a couple of other friends at Royal Porthcawl in a 4 man team event. We finished 2 points outside the prizes but one of our team picked up the nearest the pin prize when he stiffed a 7 iron to 15 inches (and holed the putt!!)
Great day out, good course, good weather, good company.
Happy days

I thought that if I didn't mention it, some bright spark would ask if he did or not
But that wasn't the shortest putt for a 2 in our group today, I had a 12 incher on the previous par 3 but no nearest the pin on that hole

Doc - I feel hurt, you played Ramsey, just down the road from me and didn't give me a call!
Mind you, I'm not sure where you played, but Ramsey is an 18 holer and neither the 1st or the 10th are par 3's, unless you played a mixture of holes. There some nice holes on that course mind you and the occasional dog leg that will catch you out if you're not careful.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Shanks - I think the club was called Kingsclere or something like that. 9 hole track with different tee positions for the back 9, but we played off mats even though the tees were in good nick. The course has you walking backwards and forwards over the canal, a small wooden clubhouse and some holiday lodges, so you must have played it.
I got down late Friday night and assumed we were playing Ely, but woke up Saturday to hear about this place. If I'd known I'd have given you a shout mate, although you may have not been available once you knew where we were playing

Shanks, just had to google around to find it, and this looks like it: http://www.oldnenegolfclub.co.uk/ The score card is more or less the same although the 1st on Saturday was 167yds according to my rangefinder, but we were using the same mats for 1 & 10 etc. According to the location map, its almost next door to Ramsey GC, so I wasn't far out

Re: Tell us about your game today...
First time out for a couple of weeks due to weather and other committments
Not too disappointed with my game today - totally fantastic conditions (16 or 17 degrees mid round) and the course was playing very well for mid March. A lot of generous forward tees but the greens were excellent for the time of year (if only I could have done them justice!)
Actually having said that, my putting wasn't too bad - a couple of lip-outs from decent distances but unbelievably had TWO 4-putts (yet still scored a point on both!) A par 4 (with a shot) in regulation and 4-putted for a 6 - SI2 hole (so two shots for me - on the green in 3 and 4-putts for a 7 to still score a point
Two other "blobs" so 34 pts with two blobs and two 4-putts, guess I can't complain! Shame I had no more eclectic rounds left - I'd have shaved another two shots off my total)

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Must have been a day for it Davie, I was playing with a 4 handicapper in the Captains's Farewell Medal yesterday and he 4 putted the 8th. I didn't have a 4 putt but made up for it with 3 x 3 putts. I actually think the speed of our greens caught a lot of people out yesterday, they were actually playing like May.
It was another 0.1 for me yesterday in my 1st qualifier of the year. Apart from the 3 putts I made a right mess of the 3rd (triple) so ended up with an 82. If I'd got a shot back for every layer of clothing I had to peel off between the start of the round and the finish I'd have made the buffer!!
Good bit better today, bounce round but a 78 on my other course with no 3 putts and nothing worse than bogey on the card and glorious spring weather too.

I played to handicap by shooting +12 yesterday. As it included 2 x 4 putts, I was quite happy.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Woo hoo, I'm going to be able to post to this thread on Sunday. Dusted off the clubs last Sunday and went for a knock with one of my mates. Hit the ball pretty well so was quite happy with that. No real chipping and putting as the greens were hollow tined in preparation for the season starting on Good Friday.
Playing Sunday and Friday next week, can't wait.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Terrific day today and I apologize in advance for any typos I may make but it's been a long day and enough beer afterwards to sink a battleship
4N day at my club (we don't have enough French or Italians to make it 6N)
30 quid for the day but for that we got coffee and bacon rolls before, plus a team shirt, and a decent meal afterwards plus prizes
As England is always the most oversubscribed team I signed up for Scotland and played with my regular golfing partner (a real Scot - I only got in thanks to a Scottish Grandmother)
4BBB Stableford off 3/4 hc and the competition was fierce! The worst score was 34 points and the best was 45
We were in the last group out and thankfully didn't know how tight the scoring was. As it happened, England and Wales fought out for the wooden spoon (Wales got that honour on countback) and Scotland/Ireland couldn't be separated on team score, even after countback so the title was shared. What we didn't know coming down the stretch was that Ireland were winning and our 41 points over 40 for the last Ireland pair got us the tie! 16 was a bit of a nightmare for both me and my partner and we only managed to scrape 1 point but I birdied 17 (almost a hole in 1 which would have been VERY expensive (stuck it to about 18") then my partner nett birdied the last to scrape that last vital point.
Good food afterwards and taking in the Wales/France match (congrats to Wales for the Grand Slam) then back to our local watering hole and my nationality miraculously changed back to English to enjoy a great victory over Ireland!
I calculated afterwards that I shot 40 points on my own ball, had it been full h/c and one of my best rounds of the last couple of years on the first day of 2012 where the tees were back close to full yardage and a damp day meant there wasn't a lot of distance out there. Happy days!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
So after a mild winter the clubs were dusted off and brought out of hibernation. The sun was shining and a lightish breeze meant it was perfect for golf. We played at Shawnee Inn which opened the day before. They were offering golf for $25 when normally they want $90 for weekend play; they're a little bit up themselves. They have 3 nines there and we played a composite course although I thought we were supposed to be playing red and blue. We played all of the red, the first five on blue and then 1, 2, 8 & 9 on white.
The greens were very bumpy so putting was pretty difficult. They also set the pins in some weird places, the greens there have some undulation and they all seemed to be on a slope. Probably not the most sensible thing for opening weekend.
Hit a few balls on the range beforehand and was pretty pleased with the strikes and ball flight, took that to the course too. I always seem to hit the ball well at the start and then lose the swing a little bit as I try to hit it that little bit harder. Shawnee is wide open compared to my course. I also developed a little bit of a hip sway which once corrected got me back on track.
All in all I was pretty pleased with my 90 first time out. Playing it again on Friday so we'll see what that brings.

I played with puligny and another friend yesterday who is a member at Ferndown. Highly enjoyable game, good company and good banter which is exactly how it should be.
Would have been even better if I hadn't lost 25p to the bugger and another 75p to our host
Roll on the return match later in the summer

Well!!!!
Played today at local muni with my mate the assistant there and another lad who works behind the bar.
Glorious sunshine and hitting the ball the best I have all year and putts dropping, stood on 11th fairway -4 for my round. Played my 9iron approach and that was it me done for the day! Left knee shooting pain down the outside and totally not able to weight bare at all tried to hobble back to club house but ended up hitching a lift with greenkeeper now sat in bar waiting for my mates to finish whilst I tuck into a sausage and onion baguette hoping my knee pain isn't a reocurrence of last years agony because the pain feels the same!

Don't expect any sympathy from LadyPutt. She will be disgusted with you for not staying out on the course to mark your partner's card.

I'm sure LP would be cracking the whip and telling me to crawl the remaining holes to mark the cards! Fortunately it was a game with the lads so no-one need a card being marked though I did forfeit the skins I'd won to that point would LP consider that reasonable return for staggering in?
Diggers your right in Supers book I must be a raving woofter as real men don't get injured on a golf course!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Ok so mixed emotions about my 2hour stint in A&E!
I'm being refered back to the surgeon who fixed my knee! The ACL is fine unlike last time so good news, however Dr said looks to be cartlidge damage so may have to open it up and sort it out but need yet another MRI to confirm!
Starting to get pissed of as this'll be the 3rd year with an injury! Super will likey call me a raving homo for injuring myself playing golf! But in my defence I'm athletic not fat SR before you ask! And the Dr reckons this can be caused as a knock on from the ACL repair!
Good news is I can play golf they reckon! But don't suggest long periods of walking!!! Work that out!

Starting to get pissed of as this'll be the 3rd year with an injury! Super will likey call me a raving homo for injuring myself playing golf! But in my defence I'm athletic not fat SR before you ask! And the Dr reckons this can be caused as a knock on from the ACL repair!

Guess we may not get our report on Queenwood then? Unless they provide you with buggies
Re: Tell us about your game today...
Well it's that time of the year again, and tonight was the last Virtual golf game for a while. The clocks go forward this weekend, so there will be time for some holes on the real stuff after work instead of smacking balls against the wall.
Mind you, I appear to be hitting the ball quite well at the moment, so looking forward to a fairly good season.
If anyone is feeling generous, they could buy me a full set of Cleveland Blacks. I would be most appreciative (easy tiger, not that appreciative)

Shame for a round at Queenwood to go begging if Mav can't make it, could always send a rep from here in his place.
Let me just check my diary. Oh what a stroke of luck....I'm free on Tuesday

Re: Tell us about your game today...
So today I took my mate out for a round at Shawnee playing the composite 18. We started on the range and I was hitting the ball pretty solid again so was happy with that.
Hit a good drive on the opener, missed the green by thinning a wedge off a scraggy lie and didn't get up and down. 3 putted the next for bogey. Saved par on the third after a poor drive but as it was a par 5 I was able to recover. So two over after 3, not too bad but could have been better.
I got cute on the following hole trying to draw a 9 iron around the trees on the left, however, I left it out to the right and it fell into one of the worst lies I have ever seen in a bunker. Buried in the back face leaving about a 10 pence piece or quarter sized piece of the ball visible. Playing away from the hole I hit this thing as hard as I could and managed to dislodge it. A more regular bunker shot and holed a 15-20 footer for a wonderful bogey.
After that I was a little more solid or boring in my play; fairways and greens in regulation except for one where the approach rolled off the back. Got that one up and down using my 7 wood as a putter from the collar of the fringe and rough. Pretty pleased with that, 3 over and 6 GIRs.
Onto the next five holes feeling pretty good. I stuffed up the 10th with a poor drive into the water, miss green with my 4th and then after a strong chip two putt for a 7 and match my front nine over par in just one hole. Play the 11th okay, make bogey. Play 12 well, left my first putt a little short; maybe 3 feet. Knock that one past, lip out on the next and I'm walking off steaming with a 4 putt 6 that included a 3 putt from 3 feet!
Needless to say I am ignoring Super's rate your game thread for the time being.
Get on the next tee and I want to smash this ball into next week. Tug it left, into more freaking water. Although I didn't know that at the time. On the green in 4, 3 putt, again, for a 7! Onto the final hole on that 9 and I chunk the tee shot into some crap just off the edge of the tee box. More steam, decide to go with 3 off the tee. Miss green, strong chip and 3 putt from fringe. I'd gone from playing golf to poker in the space of 5 holes. Full house 7s over 6s.
Final 4 holes on the other 9. Crappy tee shot, good recovery, miss green to the right into the river, drop, chip and up and down for another 6. Finished with 2 pars sandwiching a double. Shot 39 on the front 9 and accumulated 51 on the back for another freaking 90!

Everything was going so well until you started singing.
Second round of the year OS but haven't played since the end of November. Was very happy but lost my way a little bit and then chased it. Said to myself before hand I don't need to try and kill it around here, just swing easy and keep the ball in play. Finished with a solid par on a 200 yard par 3 so time to shrug it off and look forward to the next game.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
I'm down in Cornwall with JAS at the moment for a 3 day trip along with another couple of mates. We played Perranporth yesterday which is extremely quirky but really good fun to play. Hard to take the course as a serious test of golf as there are so many blind shots. Thta's not to say it isn't tricky though. Weather was great but a pretty stiff wind all through the round.
Scoring wasn't great but really good fun to play.
Today was West Cornwall. If I had to sum up the course in one word, that word would be dangerous. Some parts of the course are very badly laid out where you have groups playing towards each other on virtually the same fairway. Also a lot of tees where you walk back from the previous green directly into the line of fire of the group behind you. I had 4 near misses from flying golf balls today, that just isn't acceptable. Pity really because the course is in great condition and the greens were very quick and tricky. Again, very windy which made scoring difficult but we still had a really enjoyable time.
Tomorrow is our last day and we have saved the best till last, my beloved St Enodoc. Forecast is still warm and sunny but with a bit less wind forecast.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Today was the last big stableford (open category) before we start to get into medal comps which are split into A/B medals and C medals (apart from board comps)
Huge field today with the firsts groups going off at 7:30 and the last not teeing off until almost 1 o'clock!
For March, the course was in stunning condition with the tees and fairways being excellent and the greens like billiard tables - that coupled with the great weather conditions meant there was going to be good scores around
I haven't seen the final scores published yet but when I left the club there were 5 people all tied on 42 pts (including the 2 guys I played with!) - I scored 20 pts on the front 9 (which I was extremely pleased with as I usually struggle on the front nine and play the back 9 better). Not to be today though as I got 17 on the back for 37 total. I'm sure the CSS will move to 37 (if not more?) so I'm unlikely to get a cut but very pleased with the score.
Where I usually struggle on the 1st nine, I was very steady and with mostly bogey golf (which works nicely off a 22 h/c) - 6 x 2pts plus a 3 and a 4 pointer - only shot I dropped to handicap was a 1pt on the 9th. I was feeling very confident!
Sadly, the consistency left me on the back nine and it was a mixture of 3 and 1 pointers with only 2 2pts out of the nine.
Probably finished around 20th and comfortably in my buffer zone despite the good scores so I've got my first qualifier of the year out of the way with no increase and I'm quite pleased with myself. Would be nice if the CSS stayed at 36 pts so I get a small cut but somehow I doubt it

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Evening all, well just back from a most glorious weekend in Cornwall, as D4S eluded to earlier, 4 of us have spent the weekend in the Duchy, I'm still reeling from having to apply the factor 15 on my birthday weekend....that NEVER happens!!
Didn't play my best at Perranporth Friday, Love the course but I'm trying hard to erase my performance on it from the memory banks.
Yesterday at West Cornwall was enjoyable from the perspective that I took the spoils however, that was probably because I was the least affected by the bullet dodging that's required on what must be the "fore" capital of the country. Lovely views though (especially from the 13th tee).
Both of the above are friendly enough clubs and fun holiday golf but the class act on any Cornwall trip is St Enodoc which was absolutely idyllic today. Well I say idyllic but blobbling the par 5 1st after being 80 yards away in 2, then after a Sunday Best Drive and 18 deg rescue on the Par 4 2nd...when I still have a full wedge for a 3rd shot... thats tough!! After the joy of parring the 2nd, to then flush a 6 iron from 185 through the green and onto the next tee at the 3rd told me my ball striking was the best it had been the whole weekend...yet I was still struggling to score. Probably the funniest moment of the day came at the 6th when 3 of us were in much the same position, in a wee hollow about 30 yards short left. D4S thins it through the green into the unpleasant stuff. Myself and the other guy chip to 4 to 6 feet....D4S mutters words to the effect that his short game is sh1t and if it was decent he'd be dangerous....what happened next??
YUP...chips it out the spinach between our 2 balls and plum into the centre of the cup for his par, meanwhile we miss our putts. I wish my short game was sh1t too!!
29 points sounds really lacklustre but really...I wasn't too disappointed with it and to be honest, to get to play St Enodoc on a day like today for £25 (county card)... who cares what the score was. I can't imagine another course in England that I'd have enjoyed more today.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
I've still only played one game of golf in 2012!
Gonna change that though. A guy I am helping to sell lots of work has just joined Foxhills. Luxury lunches on expenses here I come!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Played at the Castle Course at St. Andrews yesterday, hadn't played it before but was aware that it polarises opinion. The weather was great yesterday, >20*C with only a 2-3 club wind at times. I think they have made a wonderful job of the course. The holes are very well laid out and interesting. The par 3s aren't overly long but they do have nice elevation changes and the wind also gives you something to think about. The green are extremely challenging, I can see why people don't enjoy their round here. There are so many steep run offs, it is really rewarding when you make a good job of getting up to the pin, but so frustrating when the ball nearly makes it, only to run off down another part of the green and leave you with the same sort of task. Rather than blame the course, I realise that the source of my frustrations was really down to my own shortcomings. I feel I played a lot better than I scored, so many good looking putts seemed to lip out but ultimately my short game wasn't up to the job around there. I think you need to be either a low single figure player or a member there (or a club with similarly devilish greens) to do yourself any justice in terms of scoring. I thought it was great fun anyway.

I can trump that, no round in 2012 for me, or even a hit at the range or in fact picking up a club at home. And no real prospect of getting out there anytime soon. God I hate babies.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Nice little game today - only spoiled a little by some awful organization at the club with tee times and matches
I'd booked a tee time for me and my regular playing partner a couple of minutes before midday - quite expecting the pro shop to pair up us with someone else as it was a fairly prime time at the weekend - and sure enough when we checked in they told us that we were in a 4-ball with a couple of other guys we know quite well so no problem there.
Meeting up with them on the 1st tee we decided on a little friendly match between us. I started with a horror tee shot off the first which only went about 50 yards; I know we all (or at least most of us) do that from time to time but it's the first time I've hit a bad tee shot on the 1st for months and months! Rescued a pretty decent 5 and thankfully my partner halved it in 4. The first nine was close until my partner hit a bad patch and despite me improving from the first tee shot we were 2 down after nine (a decent par on 9 for me got one back otherwise we would be 3 down). At that point we were something like 1 3/4 hours for the first nine which counts as pretty acceptable and we'd been kept waiting just a little on a couple of holes.
A quick stop at the half way hut and as we played out the 10th green we noticed a 2 ball had come through the 3-ball that was behind us. One of our opponents mentioned that he thought there was an inter-club match and he thought the two guys behind us were part of the match so we played out the 11th and let the two behind us through on the par3 12th. At that point we found out that the match coming up behind us was 7 lots of singles and from there on we were letting a pair through almost every hole.
The back 9 took us about 2:45 hours simply because we were letting 2 balls through on almost every hole. By the time we let the 5th pair through on 17 even the visiting player commented that we must be pretty pissed at having to let so many groups through
We finished up in about 4 1/2 hours which was about 45 minutes longer than the pace we were playing - fortunately the weather was much better than predicted and to be honest it really didn't matter THAT much (4 hours is about normal pace for the club and 4:10 isn't unusual) - but it just seemed very bad planning for it to have happened this way (we later found out that earlier starters had the same problem with a ladies match too)
As far as our game was concerned, I scored an approximate 33 pts on my own ball but my partner had a pretty bad day and our opponents both had a pretty good day so we lost 5&4. Good company though and I wasn't too upset with my own game. And greens maintenance had started only last Monday with tining and sanding and to be honest the greens were the best I've seen them for the first weekend after all that work. Another 7-10 days and they will be back to really top notch.
Shame the mis-organization just took a little shine off the day
