Rate your game (Just for fun)

It's a bit quiet on here lately so thought I'd do a well worn but often commented on topic.


Out of ten, rate your game in terms of the following part of the game.( 1 being 28 HCP, 10 being Scratch)

Driving.
Long Irons
Mid Irons
Short Irons
Chipping/Pitching
Bunkers
Long Putts
Short Putts
Mental Side/Temperament
Course Management (award yourself zero if you've never heard of it, or don't employ it.)

Then add the scores up to give a total out of 100.

Just for fun, not a competition between the class, but might indicate where we need to improve.

Shall i start
I've never replied to one of these topics before so -

Driving - 5, a year ago maybe 7 but i seem to have lost distance and these days when i try and hit it further i get a slice. Needs attention!
Long Irons - 8, i have 2, 3 and 4 hybrids so not really long irons but i love them. Used off the tee a lot.
Mid Irons - 7, my iron play is pretty solid
Short Irons - 7
Chipping/Pitching - 6.5, could always be improved!
Bunkers - 3, the more i practise the worse i get!
Long Putts - 4, hence the name!
Short Putts - 1, absolutely shocking of late
Mental Side/Temperament - 5, i don't flip out but do get very angry with myself
Course Management - 7, i try and leave myself around 120 into the green on most holes where practical

Total - 53.5

As a higher handicapper, that's a tough one as it's difficult to allocate the points the way you seem to want them. For example, as a 22 h/c I'm "relatively" happy with my short irons and would probably rate them as around an 8 yet that is relative to my handicap and personal expectations; on your "10=scratch, 0=28h/c" scale it would probably only be a 5 or 6

Here is my attempt though assuming that as 22 handicap, "average" on that scale is only 2 or 3!

The other way of looking at it would be to score it against where I currently am/where I want to be/what I think I should be and rate against my general happiness with each aspect - that gives a completely different aspect...

Driving: 4 - I used to able to smash it out there, but it has been woeful for 5 years now

Mental: 4 - i always lose focus at some point in the round, and sometimes my swing just deserts me
CM: 8 - I think I'm generally pretty sensible but it's the execution that lets me down.

Hmmnn. Lot of potential there. I'm good from 120 and in, but mental side and driving let me down big time.

Lots to work on this season and that is one of the reasons why I love this game! No matter how long you play it there are always areas in which you can improve. Clocks go forward this weekend and I can't wait to start getting out there in the evenings, for an hour or two after work again!

I know, I know, I should be devoting all my practice time (zero by the way) to 70 yards and in. But to be honest, I just can't be **sed!

When working on 70 yards and in becomes as much fun and as invigorating or good for working out frustrations as smashing the shit out of a ball with the big dog, then scores will tumble. Until then it will remain in the domain of the low handicappers

Always fun these sort of things, saying that 1st time I've participated in rate my game! Have often taken part in a rate some chicks rack though

Need to tighten up my long putts and hit more GIR with the long irons. But i include wedges with short irons as there wasn't a pitching option and alway been my strongest part of game from 140yards and in.

Would also say course management is my biggest strength.

Does anyone else get bored practicing with driver and woods? When working on my full swing i spend most of my time on my 5 and 6 irons. Otherwise i spend a lot of my time from 40 yards in.

Super, perhaps a better measure would be to rate each component by giving it a handicap rating (0-28 )?

To answer your first question, yes totally bored. My driver is the least used club in my bag on the range and on the course because simply hitting as far as you can isn't always the right play, yet down the range all you see is guys bashing driver after driver. Spend the majority of my practice sessions from 140yards and in. Driver practice literally just to keep things ticking.

Now the second part, good idea regarding rating to handicap would be a more accurate account for everyone as individuals based on handicap
