Based on that comeback it's worth another round of:
Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole
Europe, Europe

Only a third of GCUK Fantasy Leaguers thought Europe would get any type of result. RedRage is especially pee'd at Tiger Woods for his concession of Molinari's putt. If Molinari had missed, the result would have finished 14-14 and RedRage would have potentially walked off into the sunset with the perfect score combo and the bragging rights that come with winning Event 33, The 39th Ryder Cup. But, it wasn't a tie and that opened the door for Mary_S who strolled nonchalantly through. She was one of two who kept the faith with Europe so she and Davie earned 20 points for picking that one. She was one of two that thought the match would be tight and would finish 14.5-13.5 so she and boyhyde earned 20 points there. As Mary_S predicted both correctly she earned the combo bonus points.

Hero's and Villains; there were plenty on both sides. Tiger Woods picked as a hero by BlueCoverman was definitely a villain in raycastleunited's eyes. That concession, yes that one again, meant Molinari earned half a point. He had picked Molinari to be the millstone around team Europe's neck with a performance like Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest. If Molinari would have lost raycastleunited would have earned another 40 points and potentially the win.

The real villains were Peter Hanson and Steve Stricker. Stricker picked by many to be a good performer was especially disappointing but to lose to Kaymer! He'll never live that down. Peter Hanson, a Swede, normally good performers in the Eurovision Song Contest performed like Norway. BlueCoverman didn't care, he picked Hanson and walked away with 20 points. As mentioned above, raycastleunited did correctly pick the villain to not score a point and so did faldono1fan thus earning them 20 points. No one got the perfect combo so those bonus points fell by the wayside.

To paraphrase David Bowie: the Europeans needed to be heros, just for one day. All of them to some extent were heros, yes, even Westwood and Kaymer and Hanson. But one man stepped above all that, Europe's new talisman: Ian Poulter. The man who's going to sleep for two years and wake up for the next Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. The man that the team said we're going to change the qualification rules for; the new plan is to have 9 qualifiers, two picks and Poults. Played 4 matches, won 4 matches. Single handly kept the Europeans alive when it looked like the team had flatlined on Saturday. In the dusk, on Saturday night, the brightness of the whites of his manically, bulging eyes acted as a Spotlight which the rest of the European team flocked to like moths to a flame.

Okay, so I'm getting a little carried away, what did that mean for the GCUK Fantasy Leaguers? Well, Mary_S, LadyPutt and 1GrumpyGolfer all picked Mr Ryder Cup to be the hero so they earned 20 points. Mary_S, BlueCoverman, Davie and raycastleunited all thought the hero would earn 4 points so they scored 20 points for that one. As Mary_S predicted the perfect hero combo she earned another 20 bonus points and ultimately a runaway victory at the 39th Ryder Cup. Congratulations to Mary_S and of course Team Europe.

Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole
Europe, Europe

Davis Love III and Team USA will be vying to retreive the cup from the clutches of Jose Maria Olazabal and Team Europe. On paper Team USA looks to be stronger than Team Europe. The lowest ranked Team USA player is 23rd in the OWGR compared to 35th for Europe. But Team Europe have 4 players ranked in the Top 5 places of the OWGR. However the match is not played on paper, it's played on a golf course which Davis Love III says is set to favour the American Team. Medinah is an old style course with huge trees that'll look like it's hosting another Major Championship (it's hosted 2 USPGAs and 3 US Opens) but it won't play that way. The rough has been mowed back; the first cut could be as wide as seven paces in some places and the greens have been cut short so the speed is up.

This years Fantasy League players will need to be on the ball if they are to bring home the Ryder Cup. The competition is as follows:

1. Pick the Result

Pick overall result: Euro win / Tie / US win (20 points)
Pick correct match score: example 14.5 - 13.5 (20 points)
Correct result and score combo: example US 14.5 - Euro 13.5 (20 points)

If you choose the Tie you automatically get 14-14 as the match score.

2. Pick your Ryder Cup Hero and Villain

Pick your Hero (Top points scorer): Any Player from Team USA or Europe (20 points)
Predict his points score: example 4 points (20 points)
Correct Hero and score combo: (20 points)

Pick your Villain (Lowest points scorer): Any Player from Team USA or Europe (20 points)
Predict his points score: example 0.5 points (20 points)
Correct Villain and score combo: (20 points)

3. Pick your Ryder Cup Teams USA and Europe

Pick one player from each category for both Team USA and Europe
Each match your pick plays can earn 10 points for each win and 5 points for a half. If your pick doesn't play; tough luck.

Team USA Category A
Tiger Woods 2
Bubba Watson 7
Webb Simpson 8
Jason Dufner 9

Team USA Category B
Brandt Snedeker 10
Steve Stricker 12
Dustin Johnson 13
Keegan Bradley 14

Team USA Category C
Matt Kuchar 15
Phil Mickelson 16
Zach Johnson 17
Jim Furyk 23

Team Europe Category A
Rory McIlroy 1
Luke Donald 3
Lee Westwood 4
Justin Rose 5

Team Europe Category B
Graeme McDowell 18
Sergio Garcia 19
Peter Hanson 25
Ian Poulter 26

Team Europe Category C
Paul Lawrie 28
Francesco Molinari 31
Martin Kaymer 32
Nicolas Colsaerts 35

Example of competition entry

Team USA win
Score 15-13

Ryder Cup Hero: Ian Poulter
Score: 3.5 points

Ryder Cup Villain: Martin Kaymer
Score: 0.5 points

Team USA: Dufner, Snedeker, Kuchar
Team Europe: Rose, Poulter, Lawrie

Interesting ploy there, Mary, in not picking your hero as one of your selections. Could be onto a winner there.

Question for the good lady judge LP:

First pairings are being announced around 10pm BST: Are picks to be allowed after that time?

The pairings were actually announced nearer 11pm (from what I can remember) but I don't think it makes much difference as we've no idea how people are playing. I think we can take picks up to noon today (BST) just before the first shot is played.

After much debate the Ryder Cup is finally underway with McDowell having the pleasure of hitting the first tee shot today.

Faldono1fan has sprung into the lead, he had 5 picks playing in the morning session including two pairs. They both won guaranteeing him top spot. Both LadyPutt and BlueCoverman had five picks playing too but they could only manage 3 wins giving them joint second. Mixed fortunes for the remainder of the field and some players were guaranteed their points. Mary_S had an American pair against a European pair and the Americans proved victorious for her. Others had players on both sides of the ties.

Everyone is off the mark after Match 1 and everyone has at least 2 picks in play for the afternoon fourballs. BlueCoverman may have the best chance to score as he has all six picks playing and two "two against one" situations. These will earn him between 20 and 40 points and a huge bullseye from the rest of the GCUK Fantasy Leaguers.

Casting a lazy eye over the picks the first look suggests that it's going to be bunching up a bit. Boyhyde with some work to do but he's got strong shoulders at the bottom of the table.

That will be the fellow! Actually my distaste for him is not quite as extreme as Super's but I did feel he would have a good tournament this time. Fortunately I was wrong and I am not sure that Davis will now pick him for both sessions tomorrow.

I think that I may have got some company sharing that target Grumps!, come on haven't you updated that leaderboard yet? Innocent

The second session turned into a bit of a shellacking for the European team. Only Colsaerts can hold his head high as he almost single handedly beat the US pair of Woods and Stricker.

All GCUK Fantasy Leaguers had at least two players in the mix for the afternoon session. BlueCoverman had all six but they were playing in "two against one" situations and unfortunately for him only the ones were victorious. His 20 points have propelled him into a joint lead with RedRage who had three wins this afternoon.

Raycastleunited was one of the biggest movers with three wins and almost everyone scored points in the afternoon session; only LadyPutt and match 1 leader faldono1fan failed to score.

Good news for the chasing pack and not so much for BlueCoverman is that his Hero pick, Woods, is failing spectacularly and to make matters worse he's been dropped for the Saturday morning session.

The target that BlueCoverman had has been passed onto faldono1fan who now holds a 20 point lead. His overnight team talk along with LadyPutt's must have been stirring stuff; all of their playing picks won their matches. Davie was another top motivator with 4 out of his five picks winning. It was slim pickings for the rest of the GCUK Fantasy Leaguers.

RedRage has jumped into a 10 point lead over faldono1fan after 4 wins out of 5 in the afternoon fourballs. Raycastleunited was the other big points scorer from the afternoon session his 4 wins from 6 were enough to move him up into 3rd place as we move into the Sunday singles matches. Boyhyde's picks woke up and delivered 3 wins for him but it still wasn't enough to move him from bottom of the table.

They'll be no hiding place in the Sunday singles, all six picks will be in action so there could be plenty of movement in the table. Three GCUK Fantasy Leaguers remain in the hunt for Hero bonus points, their pick of Ian Poulter who's one of the top performers so far. Raycastleunited is looking good for the Villain bonus points; he'll be hoping that Woods beats Molinari to, not only earn him a singles win but, restrict Molinari to the performance of Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest: nul points.

BlueCoverman's 16-12 win for the US looks to be on target but stranger things have happened.

Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole
Europe, Europe

The Miracle at Medinah. What the.... How the...

There's so much to collate, wade through, and report on that these results will come in two parts. Part one will deal with the picks and part two will pull in the heros, of which there are many, villains, stand up Team USA and predictions.

Faldono1fan proved once again that he's the man for stirring team talks. All three of his Europeans delivered and two of the misfiring Americans appeared to be listening to him. He's taken a 10 point lead over RedRage in their back and forth, ding dong, battle for top spot.

LadyPutt had one of her Americans get the job done along side her European heros in the next best performance of the day. Tiger Woods stuttered his way to his first half point, avoiding a white wash and, scoring points for all those GCUK Fantasy Leaguers that thought he would perform at this Ryder Cup.

Finally, in a day of drama, boyhyde moved off the bottom of the table leaving BlueCoverman feeling blue.
