GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 - Preseason Event #1 - The Africa Open

Let's see if we can get this fantasy league going. How about naming it GolfChatUK Fantasy League?
Here's the trial balloon for the first 2 events (Africa and Joburg) of the GolfChatUK Fantasy League. They will be counted only as exhibition events but bragging rights for preseason victories are always worth something. I guess similar to the bounce matches you keep mentioning. We will start with everyone in the same league. If numbers grow, we can adapt accordingly.

The rules below the category lists are abbreviated from Goldwolf's latest version but does not include the process for determining which division (Elite and Choppers) one will start the season as we are only one division for the time being.

The Africa Open is a Weighted 1 event. See the scoring below. I have altered the scoring slightly: More points awarded for 1st place, subtracted points for missed cuts eliminated, bonus points for all six choices making cut added, and bonus points for pick making cut but having the worst total score for tourney (usually 4 rounds). That will keep the interest up for most throughout the tourney and add a small luck factor to the picks. Let me know if you like the scoring changes.

RULES ACCORDING TO GOLDWOLF (ABBREVIATED)

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, he will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in his place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you are absent for an event (e.g holidays) you may inform me of the numbers from each category you want e.g players 4 and 8 from cat A and so on.

Failure to submit picks If you do not submit picks, or fail to inform me of your absence, you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

Ties: Tie scores will be decided by the lowest individual 4 round total.

Tournaments are weighted according to relative strength or importance:
Regular Tour Stops: Weighted 1
Higher ranked tourneys (WGC, etc.): Weighted 2
All Majors - Mens and Ladies Tours: Weighted 3
(Yes. We are going to include the ladies 4 Major events and they have equal status. )

Yes, everyone picks 2 players from each category plus the reserves. We should know the tee time for the groups as well as the secured entrants by tomorrow. I've been relying mostly on europeantour.com for information.

So picks by Wednesday night (Euro Time) will be required? I haven't looked at the event yet but I'm assuming it's this week?

Sorry about that. Yes, it starts this Thursday the 5th of January. And most should pick by late Wednesday night but one can choose a player up until the time that player tees off if someone else from this site seconds that person's picks as legitimate before the tee time.

I think I finished 3rd on Elite tour in 2010, after starting the season on the Choppers Tour. Got a few wins under my belt.
Then probably another top 3 finish in 2011... with some more wins.

That's fair enough Ray...I have only been playing for one season so in future I will deviate from the system that we both currently use.

Round 2 offers 10 points again for best round of the day, 5 points for each pick making the cut as well as 20 bonus points for all 6 picks making the cut.

And we have 17 entrants for the first preseason event! Not a bad start. Of course this week and next don't count for the season total but will still be listed on the Honors Board for eternity.

Couldn't find a pin in my humble abode Shanker, so I had to use the tried and tested 'Ip Dip' method to select my players

Round 3 is in the books and the day's low score is Richard Sterne's -9. Redrage has hit the jackpot for the first 3 rounds. 7 others have twice hit the low round. I don't believe LadyPutt has instituted a blood doping policy for the first 2 exhibition tourneys. This will allow those currently near the top to get their substance control cycles in proper order. Ockie Strydom has surged into the lead in the race for last place. Unfortunately, nobody has chosen him. He's followed by Olly Wilson, Titch Moore and Matthew Nixon among others but they will need to pull off a number of double bogeys tomorrow to contend.

Great work, Venice. Not sure how I managed to slip from 4th after 2nd round to 17th overall but at least it was only a "practice". As usual, I ignored several people I often pick who then do badly - and they did well (ie Tjaart VDW).

Let's hope these regular updates encourage a few more to join in. There are still no results for the end of season even on the Darkside - very disappointing.

Oldparwin, Phillip Price retired (from the tournament not the sport) at the Africa Open. Hamstring injury apparently. Shame, as he was T13th going into Rnd 4 and one of my picks too. I think he's pulled out of the Joburg as well.

Yes. Those early leads are usually teasers as most of the points rear their ugly head at the end of the 4th round .
