Well that's it - definitely the end of an era. TIGER IS FINISHED

Now at last we can concentrate on the other players. It may be that the watching "fans" will drop off... but I would argue they are not real Golf fans and therefore will not really be missed.

It will also mean that more money will be, perhaps, put into the golf rather than paying a single person $milions in appearance money.

My god I've just had a thought - what will the sycophant golf commentators talk about now........

Looks wise at least she was well out of his league, scrubbers from diners were more his level.

Ok he's done wrong and I've never been his biggest supporter but I dint hold any of his off course antics against him, if anything fairplay for still managing somehow to play such good golf! I'm not a huge fan of his personality.

BUT I'm going on record here and saying I hope he comes back stronger than ever and smashes Nicklaus record partly to shut people like Gael up from crowing on about how wonderous Sir Jack was, fact is Jack never lived in the spotlight like Tiger so probably still has his skeletons well hidden in a closet. Also to say I saw the greatest golfer take over the mantle in the modern era, and also to see how these new breed do against a strong Tiger.

Mav i think you are completely wrong - Jack & Arnie lived in the same pressure cooker as Tiger --- in fact thinking about it Gary Player more so than almost anyone - he played with death threats and no personal bodyguards.

If there were skeletons they would have come out --- bout they were/are real family men not the "pampered" celebs you get nowadays.

Gwr , i don't agree with you. Internet, camera phones, and a society obsessed with celebrity means much more scrutiny for the likes of woods these days.

I think it's just incredible how he managed to keep so many women on the go, maintain an intensive gym routine , meet sponsors requirements, practise on the range to bed in swing changes AND win multiple golf tournaments. There's only 24 hours in a day.

Really! Fair enough if that's what you think, but none of those you mentioned were subject to a sponsor throwing $60m at them the day they turned pro thus throwing them into the spotlight for non golfing activity, none were subject to 24hour sports news coverage. The internet and digital media, paparazzi camping out for a glimpse of him not having a shave or wiping hise arse! Golf is a lot more mainstream now than ever was in the years the aforementioned players era's and celebrity is now a culture where people want the ins and outs of people lives more than in past years.

Jack and Arnie maybe family men, but would say again the media access to Tigers life compared to jack or arnie et al is far more intrusive so they may have skeletons we'll never know about because they simply weren't ever under as much scrutiny.

The press also have lists of people they do not expose due to the fact thrust r think the public want to hear it. Woods was probably on that list but the car accident snowballed everything.
It's not a straightforward scenario, not they Im saying Jack etc were serial shaggers, just that the press bury as much as they publish.

Mav - look back in history and you will see that 100 years ago they had LARGER crowds coming to matches with no ropes, no police, no bodyguards --- no waterproofs, no crowd control. They travelled to other countries on boats not on airplanes, they were not allowed into the clubhouse, they had to change in their cars

Larger crowds really!!! Don't buy that unless you can show me statiscal comparisons. The game had grown massively since Tiger came along so I'd say crowds are a lot higher you only need to attend an event to notice increased numbers.

Yes they travelled with the crowds but for how long! Arnie himself stated he had his on plane when he was interviewed at Bayhill last year. Trevino also mwntioned in run up to last years open in the lates 60's and 70's he flew first class! So not that much different in pampering really.

You can't tell me 50years ago anyone was interested in who Arnies brid was but look at today its all about know what toilet paper a celeb wiped their arse with this morning. I mean is it really front page news a world famous golfer is a prolific shagger or that McIlroy is punching above his weight with Wozniacki, not imo but that's the intrusion that makes the likes of Woods such an unapproachable character because they have it constantly.

Not saying it has to be honest just saying I can't stand him as for Tiger most arrogant without a doubt and I've always said can't stand his personality but as a golfer hard to look past what he has achieved in the game and if he wants to shag about upto him.

As for out of the player mould! No I don't think so both extremely arrogant yes but at least Tiger hasn't made clains about how he knows there are drug cheats in golf and who they are, which Player has several times yet refused to back those claims up with names or evidence

Mav - how do you know that Player is not correct? Personally I wish he would out anyone taking drugs (if indeed they are) - lets see the names.

But it is also highly possible that we are being naive to think that Golf is the "only" sport where drugs are not being taken.

I do hope he's wrong - but the odds are that there are at least 1 or 2 that are taking drugs.....

PS. I think that the tours are now taking random drug tests - but it could be I dreamt that up

GWR- I never said he's wrong, in fact quite the opposite there are too many people involved in all sports for any sport to be drug free inc golf! Tiger could well be one of them the size he is now is bordering steroid induced!

The thing that annoys me with Players claims is his refusal to name and shame, I say get it out there.

PS... I actually think he's bad for golf in the long run --- too many people spitting and abusing fans. He only does autographs when the camera is on him - otherwise he just f****s off and leaves everyone hanging.

PS. I watched Rory at the last (Cadillac I think it was ) ... he struggled to spend any time with the fans doing autographs --- he couldn't wait to get away, whilst some of the players spent a long time with the fans --- I seriously worry about Rory - I really really hope I'm wrong but I fear I am not and he's turning into a Tiger clone

Golf is not all about one individual - BTW there will be another Tiger along, perhaps in 10 years time, or it might be Rory - but there WILL be ........ and Golf will still be there

GWR- Seems we have found a common ground. Though I think Tiger has been good for the game in that he did when he first came on the scene help re-invigorate the sport and attract players to the game that may have previously shunned it as an oldmans sport. I do agree his longterm legacy is not one of class and how to behave within the game. Off course I couldn't careless about his shagging but on course he is an arse, a talented arse but still an arse!

I've also long said I cannot stand Rory, I've always thought him to be arrogant and too full of self importance, for pretty much the reasons you mention yourself plus his arrogant outbursts when commentators say something he doesn't like, but whenever I've spoken against him all I get back is he's young!! So is Matteo but he carries himself with class.

Totally agree Tiger, no Tiger or whoever the next big thing is (just hope its not Rory) Golf will always be here and the more open it is the better imo.
