While one Surry is not so happy after the final round another has disappointment tempered by a convincing victory in the first GolfChatUK Fantasy League event of the season. Mary_S had two finishers in the top 4 and that enabled her to coast to the finish line. RedRage was the closest challenger with two picks scoring points. 1GrumpyGolfer matched RedRage's finish points haul but that wasn't enough to earn a podium finish; BlueCoverman hung on to take third. Everyone else, except Davie, had a pick score points.
Trevor Fisher-Jnr shot a 64 to catapult himself up into a top 10 finish. James Kamte slumped to an 81 and that poor round saw him fall 44 places on the leaderboard. Lucas Bjerregaard finished in last place. No one picked any of these players so no points were awarded in the final round.
It looks like the GolfChatUK Fantasy League will stay in South Africa for the Alfred Dunhill Championship next week as tournament play comes to a close in 2013.

There may have been plenty of points on offer in round 3 but GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers didn't seem to take advantage. Hennie Otto had a stunning back nine finishing with 29 after taking 7 on the ninth. His round of 65 was the best of the day and that catapulted Mary into the top spot. RedRage and Davie picked up points as one of their picks each shot 68 and that was the score needed to make the Top 10 Low Scores. There were two players, Doug McGuigan and Chris Swanepoel, who each shot 78 which was the worse round but no one picked either of them.
In other news, at the World Cup of Golf Stuart Manley had 3 ones on the card. He had a hole in one at the third and was cruelly denied a new Mercedes as it was only on offer for the final round. He was probably giving it some Muttleys as he took 11 to complete the next!

A final hole birdie for Darren Fichardt meant that he scrapped into the weekend after a remarkable turnaround from round 1. His 65 included two holes where he made a 3 and 4 shot improvement over yesterday. He was one of the reasons that the cut line moved at a very late stage to -2. Fichardt will probably be off of Mary_S's Christmas card list as the moving cut line knocked out Lyle Rowe and prevented Mary from having a perfect six. The next closest was RedRage who had four picks, almost everyone else had three picks except for Davie who has to make do with two. Mary will most likely console herself with the fact that Steve made the cut more comfortably than it looks.
Charl Schwartzel matched Fichardt's 65 and these were the rounds of the day. This earned bonus points for everyone bar Davie, again, and even more for BlueCoverman and RedRage who had picked both of them. The worse rounds were 80s, most likely because Stephen Swanepoel retired, and they were from Dion Fourie and Gavan Levenson.
10 points separates the top 4 on the leaderboard and with plenty of bonus points available in round 3 there's still a lot to play for.

A fine start to round 1 from GolfChatUK's Steve Surry brought early promise of points for round 1 but some fine golf late in the day meant that he just missed out on scoring points for half of the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers. Matthew Nixon was one of those late finishers and his round of 64 was the best of the day. The Top 5 Low Round mark was 66 and Retief Goosen rolled back the years to match that mark. That earned points for BlueCoverman and SetupDetermines and that was it for the scoring. Stephen Swanepoel had the worse round with an 89.
With the cut line close to being under par already there's work to do for some picks if they are to make the weekend.

There's not much of a cooling off period after the end to the 2013 season and the first event of the 2013-2014, which is also the opener to the 2014 European Tour season, kicks off just four days after Henrik Stenson wrapped up the double money-bags award. King Stenson is in his counting house and not returning to South Africa to defend his South African Open title which ironically was his first European Tour win for five years. Charl Schwartzel is the headline act and the only one ranked in the top 50 and just one other player is ranked in the top 100.
GolfChatUK's resident pro, Steve Surry, is in Cat C. After recent success and ranked some 400 odd places higher than this time last year he was automatically entered rather than trying to Monday qualify. Please note there is a strong possiblity you will not make it onto Mary's Christmas card list if he isn't among your picks.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply. Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

First out of the blocks this week!
Cat A: Charl Schwartzel; Hennie Otto (res. Steve Webster)
Cat B: Edoardo Molinari; Chris Doak (res. Anthony Wall)
Cat C: Oliver Bekker; Lyle Rowe (res. Vaughn Groenewald)
After much deliberation, I decided that I would stick to my pledge of not jinxing any of the West country boys!

He's tied for third now but scoring seems high so there's a good chance he will stay near the top. Of course we're supporting him for all the right reasons and not just wishing for Fantasy League points.

Birdies on three of the par 5s and an eagle on par4 11 .. that must've been quite special!

Sorry that Steve didn't quite manage any points for those who put their fantasy league reputations on the line!
Had a quick word with him, apparently he didn't play that well but managed to score well. The eagle was driver and then 7 iron into the hole, unfortunately the cameras didn't capture it. Will have to see what tomorrow brings, I will be happy if he makes the cut.

You can relax now Mary. Steve comfortably made the cut after a round of 73 today. Let's hope he can kick on over the weekend and earn a nice pay packet in time to buy his mum something nice for Christmas.

Cheers GG. I think I saw something in the Fantasy League rules about next of kin getting points when a player makes the cut.

Good luck to him Mary, there doesn't look to be that many places available so fingers crossed we have a late addition to category C.
