After two playoffs in the GolfChatUK Fantasy League it was only fitting that the European Tour went to a playoff to determine the winner. After watching Oliver Fisher miss his approach shot left, Thomas Aiken found the heart of the green safely and holed a monster of a putt to seal victory. Aiken's win spelt good news for four Fantasy Leaguers who had picked Aiken.
Everyone had at least one pick score points, in RedRage's case it was the winner. Mary_S and SetupDetermines both had two picks score points; both SetupDetermines' picks including the winner finished in the top 5 but Mary_S had one that was propping up the leaderboard. Davie and 1GrumpyGolfer had four picks score points; Davie's didn't crack the top 10 and that hindered his chances, 1GrumpyGolfer had two in the top 3. LadyPutt and BlueCoverman had five picks score points. LadyPutt had three finish in the top 5 but didn't pick the winner. BlueCoverman had four of the top 5 and that catapulted him to victory.
JJ Senekal had the best round of the day with a 64. Chris Doak accumulated 84 and that dropped him like a stone for the worse round, last place combo. Those extra points kept Mary off of the bottom of the leaderboard.
Next week is the WGC Accenture Matchplay and in keeping with recent GolfChatUK Fantasy League tradition a load of picks will need to be made in that event.

Round 3 finished shortly after the round 2 update and it's pretty much as you were. A small change to the leaderboard as LadyPutt and Mary_S swap places. The bottom five places are all separated by five points. Davie maintains his lead over BlueCoverman after he had two "picks" in the Top 10 Low Round scores. BlueCoverman had a good pick and a bad pick scoring points through the Top 10 Low Round scores and worst round. Everyone else bar Mary_S had a pick in the Top 10 Low Round scores.
Emiliano Grillo shot 62 for the lowest round and the lead. Adrien Saddier had a sad time out there with a 76 and a slide into last place. Only Saddier was picked by a Fantasy Leaguer.
11 picks are in the top 22 players and 2 are in joint last so there are plenty of possibilities for the final round.

Round 2 eventually finished after a second delay and as expected not all players came back to play out their second round. The cut line held at -5 and we said goodbye to a number of picks. No one managed the full complement and only 3 Cat D picks made it to the weekend and Davie had 2 of them. Both Davie and BlueCoverman fared the best with 9 of their 12 through to the weekend. BlueCoverman earned more bonus points as he had the full set in Cat A and C. 1GrumpyGolfer, LadyPutt, and Mary_S all had 7 picks make it, all earned bonus points but Mary_S had two full sets in Cat B and C. RedRage and SetupDetermines had 6 picks through but only SetupDetermines earned any bonus points.
The best round came from BlueCoverman's pick of John Hahn with a round of 61. The worst round was a 78 again and this time Peter Whiteford had that number.
Round 3 is already well underway so it won't be long before we have another leaderboard update.

More picks did not mean more points. Only 4 of 52 picks scored bonus points and pick by numbers Davie had 2 of them! Davie had the top and the bottom of the leaderboard sewn up earning low round and worse round bonus points. His closest challengers are the ladies as they each had a pick in the Top 5 Low Round scores. Everyone else will have to wait for the second round to get off of the mark.
Number 6 or Ricardo Santos had the low round of the day with a 62. Number 1 or Alex Haindl had the worst round with a 78.
-2 is the cut line and that would leave a monster field for the weekend. Steve Surry is on that number and fingers crossed for him and a number of Fantasy Leaguers that he makes the cut.

After the relative success of the 12 pick Joburg Open we're repeating the trick again this time at the Africa Open. Defending champion Darren Fichardt is almost the highest ranked player in the field but Gregory Bourdy is 5 spots ahead of him. No one in the top 100 is playing so this time a few names will only be recognised by their mothers. One name that is sure to be recognised is GolfChatUK's resident pro Steve Surry who is still one of the headliners in Category D.
There are four Categories and you need to pick three, plus reserve, from each one. There's additional cut bonus points on offer this time around. If you get all of your picks through in any category you get a small bonus. Get all 12 picks through and you get an even bigger bonus. It's all way down at the bottom in the scoring section if you are interested.
This is a full field with cut event, so cut points will be available; see above.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 12 players as follows:
Pick 3 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply. Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

I hate to do this .. don't think I've ever done a pick by numbers yet in all the time we've been doing this but I'm delivering training all this week and no proper internet access apart from very short messages from phone .. so can I please have 1, 4, 6 and 9 as reserve from each cat. I'll be back to my very worst picking proper next week I promise!

Glad to hear your thoughts Red. It's not an exact science and maybe field sizes need to be taken into account for expanded picks. The Masters, for example, has less than 100 players normally so picking 12 players would be excessive. I think it worked for the Joburg Open because there were 210 players that were then cut to 65 and ties.
Thoughts on field sizes of approximately 120-156: stick with four categories and but reduce to two picks, or, back to three categories and but up picks to three. Masters and limited field events, like WGCs and ET finale series, back to original format?
I'm just trying to get the balance right, if possible, comments welcome everyone.

I've stuck with some picks from last week and then picked some that did well last week.
Edit: and I would likely have picked Tyrell Hatton and Andy Sullivan had they been playing

May I humbly suggest LP that you enforce for the next 3 events a 'Grumps must post his picks immediately and before anybody else' rule to avoid a reoccurrence of such shady behaviour?

Hmm, a lot of you may have to get up very early or stay up very late to get picks in before the first tee time then
I tend to pick late because I need to find time to do some work

A bit harsh on Mr Horsey there LP...just outside the top 10 with a 5 under 66 is a decent start I would suggest!

I said some, not a lot! As we've now had another 9 inches of snow so far today and add that to what's to left over from last time there's about 18 inches of snow covering my garden I'm sorely tempted.
Anyway, rather than moaning about me, you might want to direct your attention to Mr Pick by Numbers; top and bottom of the leaderboard!

So there IS something in this pick by numbers thing!
Seriously .. don't think I've ever done it before and would rather not do it again .. just an extremely hectic start to the week with that four letter word beginning with W .. only access through phone and didn't have time to go through the big field and multiple picks .. It won't happen again unless I have a similar week .. but it really would be funny if just for once I get a big result out of it!

I'm sure that I could make it seem very difficult but this doesn't appear to be the hardest course on the tour, a lot of the players are shooting very low scores!
When was the last time Santos had a 62 or Olly Fisher a 63?

No one likes a show-off.
23 players still to finish round 2 and with the cut line hovering around -5/-4 you have to wonder how many of those with 1 or 2 holes to go will resume.

Don't you mean Davie had two 'lucky number picks' in the Top 10?

What the hell happened to Chris Doak?? A round of 84 that included an 8 and a 9 and was the worst round by 9 shots. A dramatic collapse down the leaderboard to finish last. Must have been some pep talk from Mary!

It's good to see that in the end meticulous research and an abundance of skill triumphed over lucky pick by numbers!
