The lead changed hands a number of times as the Joburg Open came to a close. What wasn't in doubt was George Coetzee putting on a master class.  Eleven picks were in the placings at the start of the final round and some lived, thrived, and survived looking to book a place at Hoylake.  On the back nine putts slid by the hole, shots went awry, and the chasing pack jockeyed for the final positions.  When the dust settled seven picks were in the placings, six of which were in the top 10.  Five picks were tied for fifth or better so let's get down to the nitty gritty.

All GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers had at least one pick score points; BlueCoverman had the most with four picks including the winner and he locked up third place.  Mary_S and Davie each had one pick but there was a slight difference in calibre, Mary had the winner and Davie had a top 5.  SetupDetermines had two picks in the top five.  RedRage, LadyPutt, and 1GrumpyGolfer all had three picks.  RedRage didn't have the winner but all three were in top 5.  Both LadyPutt and 1GrumpyGolfer had the winner and a runner up and 1GrumpyGolfer's points haul was enough to close the gap on LadyPutt.

It came down to the last pairing on the course. Justin Walters was in second place and was in with a chance of tying Coetzee if he made eagle.  He made eagle in round 3 so why not again.  After three shots birdie was looking unlikely and par would give him solo second.  The par putt slid by, solo second fell by the wayside, and he finished in a three way tie for second.  That promoted Jin Jeong into second and those additional points meant the playoff king, 1GrumpyGolfer, beat the bonus point queen, LadyPutt, by virtue of Jeong's higher finish compared to Roope Kakko.

No bonus points were awarded in the final round.  Andy Sullivan shot 65 for the best round of the day.  Byeong-hun An shot 78 for the worse score.  Soren Kjeldsen finished last after a 76 dropped him to the bottom of the pile.

With more picks than usual in play for the third round it was another day for bumper bonus points.  Nearly all the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers earned points and the bonus queen further extended her lead at the top of the leaderboard.  LadyPutt had four picks in the Top 10 Low Round scores and despite not having the low round scorer she still matched the high bonus point score.  RedRage and BlueCoverman matched her points total but it was through three picks as they both had Thomas Aiken who was the low scorer of the day.  BlueCoverman doubled up by having the best and worst of the day through John Hahn's stumble.  1GrumpyGolfer also had three picks score points and SetupDetermines had one pick score points; they rounded out the point scoring for the day.

Aiken shot 63 and his -9 was the best performance of the week so far.  Hahn had a 77 and has slipped to the bottom of the leaderboard.  Eight picks are in the top 9 spots on the leaderboard and a further three are in the scoring zone we could end up with a playoff for the second week running.

GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers may have had double the number of picks but it didn't really improve their chances of getting picks through to the weekend.  No one managed a perfect 12 and very few bonuses were handed out for achieving the complete set in any category.  LadyPutt's pin worked the best, she had 8 picks remain in contention and she had all of her picks from Cat B make it earning her an additional 5 points.  Mary_S and BlueCoverman each had 7 picks into the weekend and they both had all Cat A picks make it too so they got in on the bonus points.  RedRage and 1GrumpyGolfer said goodbye to half of their picks but for RedRage the blow was softened by having the complete set for Cat B.  Davie and SetupDetermines saw two thirds of their picks pack their bags early.

LadyPutt yet again had one of the low round scorers.  This time it was Roope Kakko who shot -8 on the East Course.  His round was tied by David Horsey who was on the West course.  The worse round came from the West course and Duncan Stewart had a day to forget finishing the round at +11.

10 picks are within the top 16 places on the leaderboard and with more bonus points available in round 3 can anyone catch the bonus queen?

A bumper day of points after a bumper day of golf at the Joburg Open.  210 players took to the East and West course and there was some fine play and some not so fine play.  Four players ended the day at -7 and three were picked by the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers.  Another four picks made the low round scores, this was extended to the top 10 but it didn't have made any difference to the award of bonus points.  After round 1, 1GrumpyGolfer has sprung into the lead with four of his twelve picks scoring points including two that shot -7.  The ladies lead the chase as they each had three picks score points and LadyPutt has a slight advantage over Mary_S by also having two picks that shot -7.  Everybody else had two of their picks score points but SetupDetermines didn't pick one of the low round players so he's the strong man at the moment.

Alastair Forsyth, Justin Walters, and Edoardo Molinari all shot -7 over the easier West course.  Craig Lee shot -7 over the harder East course.  Michiel Bothma accumulated his +12 over the East Course.  Rounds of -6 got you into the low round scores.

GolfChatUK favourite, Steve Surry, is handily placed after his round of -4 over the West course.  The cut line is currently -3 so good rounds will be needed by almost two thirds of the picks to ensure their continued participation over the weekend.

This is the monster field event on the co-sanctioned European Tour.  Some 200+ pros will take part on the East and West courses at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club over the first two days.  After that the top 65 and ties will resume battle over the East Course.

Charl Schwartzel, although the highest ranked player in the OWGR, is not the headliner of this event.  That honour goes to GolfChatUK's resident pro Steve Surry who is one of the headliners in Category D.  Category D? I hear you cry.  Yes, that's right, it's a bumper field so there's a bumper amount of picks too.

There are four Categories and you need to pick three, plus reserve, from each one.  There's additional cut bonus points on offer this time around.  If you get all of your picks through in any category you get a small bonus.  Get all 12 picks through and you get an even bigger bonus.  The scoring generosity continues with the Low Scores bonus points being extended to the Top 10 Low Round scores.  It's all way down at the bottom in the scoring section if you are interested.

This is a full field with cut event, so cut points will be available; see above.

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 12 players as follows:

Pick 3 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).

If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.  Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Great idea Grumps .. Probably another MASSIVE fail for me again but I like the format for such a big field ... nice idea for extra bonuses too ...

Just to stress what I think I've read in case anyone else hasn't read the small print ... THREE (plus reserve) for every category?

That's right Davie. Three (3) from each of the four (4) categories making twelve (12) picks plus your four (4) reserves in total.

I'm likely to balls up the admin with all of the bonuses but I'm sure that will be pointed out to me quite quickly.

Can't believe you didn't go with I'm Hugo Kakko in cat B, Blue. Thought that would be right up your alley.

Some good starts made by picks and some not so good. I'm Hugo not so Kakko going well; collectively -10 under. Or they were about 10 minutes ago

Is the East course considered to be the more difficult of the two?

Too complicated and should have been pointed out prior to me updating the scoring system.  Besides I was panicked enough by Mary's picks where she swapped Cat D and C picks around.

Sorry about that, I somehow got in a bit of a pickle with my cut + paste routine!  Embarassed

I think it will be quite interesting to see if the league changes drastically after round 2, when everybody has played both courses. Could be some of us with a false sense of security this evening!  Innocent

Picks playing the West course will need to be about -3 or -4 under after today to be relatively safe on the harder East course tomorrow.

This week's tournament is using scores in relation to par as opposed to a pure number. The same would be done at Pebble due to the different pars of the courses.

" After round 1, 1GrumpyGolfer has sprung into the lead with four of his twelve picks scoring points including two that shot -7."

You now have 60 points, so you got 10 points each for 4 players in the top 10, plus you get 10 extra points for the low score players. Is that right ?

Not picking on you Grumps, just wanting some clarification.  Rolling Eyes

Yes, Setup.  In rounds 1 and 3 if your pick has the low round they automatically get into the Top whatever low round scores so the points get doubled up.  LadyPutt, Mary, Blue, Davie, and Red all benefitted from this rule too.  It's been this way forever and certainly since the last time you asked Wink if I remember correctly you were the beneficiary of this last time around too  GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2013–2014 - Winter/Spring Session - Event #09 Joburg Open 1927768590

It is my experience Setup that there are only two rules in this Fantasy League as follows:-

Rule 1: In the event of any query or dispute the fantasy league administrator is always right.

Rule 2: In the event of the fantasy league administrator being wrong, Rule 1 applies  Wink

Says the man with Edouard Dubois!

Name recognition and playing the West course in round 1 for me. Walters is a saffer and doesn't have a bad ranking so he was in. Forsyth was going to be a reserve until I noticed he was starting on the West and he got upgraded.

Not true, I've wanted to screw you over a couple of times and LadyPutt wouldn't let me. Plus I got dinged on a well after the fact dq, which you said I shouldn't get the cut points, which stood. Strangely, the ET website leaderboard shows him as being -8 for today's round, but says the round was a 64 whereas David Horsey's -8 round is shown as a 63  scratch Some mistake, surely .....

There's no stopping LadyP at the moment! Perhaps she would be kind enough to share her lotter numbers with us?  Laughing

I'm enjoying this format - makes a nice change to have 7 players to keep an eye on over the weekend!  Wink

Agreed Mary I'm enjoying this format as well. A bit more work for Grumps perhaps, but much more fun having 4 categories and 12 picks at the start!

What's up with the favourite Charl this week? A fairly ordinary round of level par today leaves him well down the field at -4. Keep an eye out for Thomas Aiken as he hits the top of the leaderboard. I believe that only one fantasy leaguer had the good sense and intelligence to pick him this week, not sure who it was though... Innocent
