Well it wasn't quite the procession many thought it would be.  Rory McIlroy did enough to hold onto victory but the margin was only two, down from the six he started with.  The chasing pack was headed by playing partner Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia and as mentioned a few times SetupDetermines had all three of these players plus another high placed finish however, it wasn't enough to catch RedRage. RedRage saved the best for last with all nine picks through and six players finishing in the placings including the two runners up and another two top 10 finishes.  LadyPut had four points finishes including three in the top 10.  Davie slipped back after three of his nine picks scored points but crucially only one was only just within the top 10.  Mary_S had three picks finish in the top 10 and she sneaked above BlueCoverman despite four of his picks finishing in the points.  1GrumpyGolfer had two picks score points but none were within the top 10.

Four players shot 65 for the low round of the day and two of them were picks.  Shane Lowry and Chris Wood were both picked by RedRage.  BlueCoverman, Davie, LadyPutt, and Mary_S also picked one of these.  Jim Furyk and Marc Leishman also shot 65.  At the other end of the spectrum Martin Kaymer suffered a US Open and World Cup hangover finishing with a 79.  1GrumpyGolfer, BlueCoverman, Davie, and LadyPutt earned points from this poor play.  Rhein Gibson finished at the bottom of the leaderboard some 27 shots behind Rory McIlroy.

The scores were very tightly packed with only 9 shots separating the lowest to the highest rounds.  Rory McIlroy's eagle on the last knocked the 69s out of the Top 10 Low Round scores and that halved the number of picks scoring points.  One of the third round lowest scores came from Jordan Spieth who was picked by Davie who also had another pick score points; he's closed the gap on RedRage but otherwise it's pretty much as you were.

Mary_S and SetupDetermines had two picks shoot 68, BlueCoverman and LadyPutt each had a player shoot 68.  RedRage had a pick towards the top and bottom of the scoring spread.  His pick of Thomas Bjorn earned worst round bonus points.  Bjorn was one of five players to shoot 76.  1GrumpyGolfer also had Bjorn so he was lucky to pick any points up whatsoever.

Darren Clarke, like Spieth, shot a 67.  Louis Oosthuizen, Billy Hurley-III, Ryan Palmer, and Charley Hoffman were the other players to shoot 76, just like Bjorn.

With a six shot lead at the top of the leaderboard Rory, and Setup, are looking good for lots of points whether they be OWGR or Fantasy League.  The minor placings may hold some weight but Setup also has Fowler so will a lead of 105 points be enough for RedRage to hold on for a first win this session?

Is SetupDetermines slipping?  Only seven picks through to the weekend and he's not on top spot on the leaderboard anymore.  Only four picks failed to make the cut at the Open and all were in Category C.  Davie didn't need to review his picks as he was one of two Fantasy Leaguers to make it to the hallowed ground of all nine picks making the cut.  RedRage was the other with the full set and he has the lead after round two.  The rest of the Fantasy Leaguers have either seven or eight picks left.  LadyPutt and 1GrumpyGolfer have eight, BlueCoverman, Mary_s and SetupDetermines all have seven picks left.

Dustin Johnson shot 65 to take the low round of the day prize and Sandy Lyle had an 84 to finish very close to the bottom of the leaderboard.  No one picked either of these players.

Round three sees a two tee start in an attempt to avoid bad weather affecting the play.

The morning wave had the best of the weather and the majority of the good scores came in the morning.  Rory McIlroy shot 66 to take the lead at the Open once again.  SetupDetermines was the only one to discount Rory's round two woes and is looking pretty pleased with himself.  He also had Sergio Garcia amongst the other picks that shot 68.  RedRage joins him in the lead with three picks shootng 68.  BlueCoverman and LadyPutt had two picks in the Top 5 Low Round scores and the bouncing Mary_S had one pick in the scores.  1GrumpyGolfer and Davie are yet to get off the mark.  Bryden Macpherson shot 90 to be at the bottom of the leaderboard by some distance.

The 143rd Open Championship returns to Royal Liverpool or Hoylake as it usually known. The venue last held the Open in 2006 when Tiger Woods became the Champion Golfer of the Year for the third time.  The course was playing hard and fast and he famously only used the driver once, primarily because he hit 50 yards right of where he was aiming.  It's good to know that the best players in the world are capable of shots we can comfortably manage.  This year will be a different story; the course is still quite green so it won't be as hard or as fast as last time.  The rough will be just that rather than the wispy stuff from last time but driver use will be at a premium as players attempt to avoid the bunkers.  As was the case in 2006 play will start from the members 17th hole and finish on their 16th which is a par 5.  with two par fives in the last three holes the Open Championship could realistically be won or lost here.

93 of the top 100 players in the world are here for the Open and only Steve Stricker, ranked 19, is missing from the top 74.  Phil Mickelson is the defending champion when he put on a master class at Muirfield in the final round.  Tiger Woods returns to action for the first time since missing the cut at his last event a month or so ago.  Remarkably there are only four amateurs in the field of which only one came through final qualifying.

We are back to our regular three Categories but you still need to pick three, plus reserve, from each one.  The additional cut bonus points are still on offer this time around.  If you get all of your picks through in any category you get a small bonus.  Get all 9 picks through and you get an even bigger bonus.  It's all way down at the bottom in the scoring section if you are interested.

This is a full field with cut event, so cut points will be available; see above.

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 9 players as follows:

Pick 3 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).

If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.  Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Jumping up and down because the coverage has cut out several times due to the thunder storms!  GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2013–2014 - Spring/Summer Session - Event #16 The Open - Page 2 398825057

Weather is calm at the moment, so hopefully I'll get to see the rest without interruption. Although he's not one of my picks, I would love Sergio to win.

Putter's a bit cold for Sergio but if he can keep within two or three he'll have a chance.

McIlroy looking for a 3-5-3 finish for a six shot lead for Sunday. Looks like this could be Setup's after all....

Rory's putt could have consequences for the Top 10 Low Round scores.

-3s knocked out of the Top 10 scores as Rory eagles the last to finish with a 68.

He's a golfer but doesn't watch the PGA stuff - he was telling me about Alliss going on about this "walker person" and asked me if I knew him .. When I told him he'd won 2 (3?) PGA events early in the year, my friend was amazed - he'd listened to the gospel according to Alliss and thought this guy was a nobody.

Alliss should have retired years ago - two or three time winner this year and he didn't know about him? Or was he dumbing down for the masses? Either way, shouldn't be anywhere near golf coverage (shame JohnnyO doesn't post here much anymore .. I know HIS views on Alliss

Looks like Kaymer is toying with worst round and last place but with two par fives you think he'll comfortably move away from that much to my disappointment.

Nice round from Chris Wood; in with a blemish free 65 and a very good chance of low round of the day. That's more good news for RedRage, Davie, and the bouncing Mary.

Kaymer made a bit of a mess of the last and finishes with a 79. No last place to go with it and that gives half of the Fantasy Leaguers, including Davie, a good shot of worst round points

Another clanger from Alliss today. Dustin Johnson called Justin Rose on the third hole. Easy mistake to make as they both look alike GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2013–2014 - Spring/Summer Session - Event #16 The Open - Page 2 2975105902

Johnson: bright blue shirt and white strides, fairly full beard.
Rose: white shirt, dark blue strides and clean shaven.

Close but not quite the cigar Setup.

Well done RedRage, a Rory McIlroy like performance.

The Adam Scott method is paying off for me.... Skipping an event or two has led me a career slam of Major titles Smile Pity my week to week form has been so poor... I will still blow the froth off a couple to celebrate though!

Well played RR - obviously a man for the big occasion.

It was certainly good viewing, right down to the last few holes. Looking forward to the Ryder Cup already!  Cool

Thanks for all the hard work GG - much appreciated that you kept everything updated, even though you were on your hols! Have a safe journey home.  Flower
