Claims to Fame
The guy who caddied for Paul Curry during his time on the European Tour in the 1980's and 1990's plays his golf at the same club as me. The other day someone asked him about those old times and he said "Do you know what my claim to fame is?" "You were on Paul's bag when he won the Jersey Open in 1994?" someone else suggested.
"No" came the reply, "I've eaten McDonalds in all five continents!"
So anyone got any claims to fame that they want to share?...funny or otherwise!

Re: Claims to Fame
Hmm was it the Aussies? I seem to remember when I was at school the five were America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia
Then America was split into North and South and Antarctica was added in, right?
A claim to fame I have (vaguely golf related) is I was born and grew up in Barrow In Furness where the (in)famous Maurice Flitcroft lived.
For those who don't remember, Maurice was the crane driver who kept entering The Open championship under various names and credentials without ever reaching a standard that would get him into most clubs. As he was banned for life from ever joining any club (I think) he used to practice out on the school playing fields. I spent many a school lesson gazing out of the window watching him hack his way around

5 or 7 whatever...I thought the comment was pretty funny!
Have you read the Maurice Flitcroft biography 'The Phantom of the Open' Davie?...it is not a bad read and quite amusing!

No I've not read it Blue .. but I certainly know he was a pretty strange guy. I believe he passed away a couple of years ago now
Re: Claims to Fame
Died in 2007 Davie aged 77.
Using a half set of mail-order clubs carried in a red imitation-leather bag, he scored a 49 over par 121 in a qualifying round of the Open in 1976. Brilliant!

Re: Claims to Fame
That's it Blue ... and by September '76 he was back hacking it around the school playing fields again, trying harder - I think he entered at least once more under a different name but not sure if he ever got to play as they were on the lookout for him
Re: Claims to Fame
I think he played a number of times under different aliases, he got caught a number of times. I think he did manage 9 holes another time before they kicked him off of the course.

Re: Claims to Fame
The Di Canio sacking and his career timeline reminded me that I was at Hillsborough when he pushed referee Paul Alcock over.
Another footballing one: I saw Scott Barrett score for Colchester against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in the early 90s. Now on first reading this doesn't sound impressive until it's pointed out that Barrett's a goalkeeper.
