The GCUK Fantasy League history will be made this week as 2 events are being held simultaneously for the very first time. On the west side of the pond in Orlando, Florida is the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The strength of the field is stronger than most regular tour stops due to Arnie's invites being rarely turned down and that makes this a Weighted 2 event.

Martin Laird, the defending champion, was the first European to win this tournament last year even though it's been around since 1966 when it was the Florida Citrus Open Invitational. Another 45 year drought is highly unlikely. Mr. Palmer did win the tournament once in 1971 but at the Rio Pinar Country Club.

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

The tabulating work gives me a much needed respite from my music studies which are evil because my piano teacher is a Russian lady who told me on my last lesson, "Don't beat yourself up because you make mistakes. That's my job. Don't take away my fun."

But the main reason for having 2 tourneys during the same week several times during the season is that the Fantasy League is focused on the European Tour schedule of events. If there is a strong field elsewhere which should be included on the schedule we should not use that as an excuse to negate an ET event especially on European soil. Next week we will also have 2 events with the first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, as well as the Sicilian Open. It may be advisable to study up on the ladies or just pick Yani Tseng. From the AP desk a few days ago:

"The 24-year-old Tseng won her 14th LPGA Tour title and second in four events this year. She led the tour last season with seven victories — including major wins in the LPGA Championship and Women's British Open — and finished with 12 worldwide titles.

When you're hot, you're hot and that's exactly the game Doc has been playing lately. He is the first round leader after waltzing to a victory in Spain last week. Now he's doing it with a different style selection in the former Spanish colony of Florida. One week it's by the numbers, the next week it's by the age-old pick-a-name method.

Doc leads four others whom each have 40 points and the rest of field minus two have 20 points after Round 1. He and faldono1fan both chose Jason Dufner who tied for the low round of the day with Charlie Wi whom nobody chose. Nobody chose either David Damesworth (who's he?) and Ricky Barnes for worse round of the day.

Two Category A choices: Justin Rose and Tiger Woods garnered most of the points for the Fantasy League competitors. A brief scan of the selections reveal that many are still in the hunt with a number only a few strokes within striking distance of the lead. Round 2 and the distribution of making the cut points are eagerly anticipated. LadyPutt suffered the misfortune of choosing Tim Clark who was disqualified for signing a wrong scorecard. She will not have a shot at the 40 points awarded for having all six picks make the cut.

"Meanwhile, the 13th hole was particularly unlucky for Tim Clark, whom officials disqualified from the tourney after he signed for a score lower than the one he made on the 370-yard par-4. Clark scored a six on the hole but signed for a five, according to a tour official."

Such is life and hopefully the Fantasy League Judge will not hold it against him if he ever appears before her in court.

There's a three way tie at the halfway point in Florida: Fantasy League points leader boyhyde, faldono1fan and Mary_S. Together with raycastleunited and hogie, the five set a GCUK Fantasy League record for most number of competitors in one event having all six picks make the cut. And the rest of the League members are feeling inadequate about lacking such insight and wondering what went wrong.

Here's what went wrong:

A number of competitors chose Sang-Moon Bae.
The reason: he was hot. So hot he jumped out of the frying pan and missed the cut.

Round 3 sees the League's top point getter involved a pitched battle for the top spot of the Palmer Invitational. boyhyde grabbed the day's high with 60 big ones. Seven others managed 40 points, most based on selecting Ernie Els who was one of four with the low score of the round. Nobody selected the three pro's who had the worse score of the day at +7: Nick Watney, Tom Gillis and Jhonattan Vegas proving once again that the bottom of the barrel is not always reserved for the has-beens and have-nots. With over half of the Fantasy League competitors having at least 5 players still on the course, the pitched battle is guaranteed to continue until the last ball has dropped ending the tourney.
