This week's GCUK Fantasy League twin stop is hosted by the European Tour in Morocco, a location forever immortalized in the film "Casablanca." The ET website doesn't mention the movie but it does offer an insight into one of the changes taking place this year on the course:

"Last year the Tropheé Hassan II was played in a pro-am format, with two professionals and two amateurs per team for the first two rounds, which were played alternately over Golf du Palais Royal and the neighbouring Golf de L’Océan before the final two rounds were contested over the former.
This year, however, it will be a standard tournament without the amateurs, and Golf du Palais Royal will be the only course used."

This is good news as this is only the 3rd tournament in the event's very short history. Having half of the field as amateurs is a certain way to kill a professional golf tournament in the long run, especially if one is attempting to attract better talent and secure a permanent stop on the ET. This tournament is a definite Weighted 1 event which means tough picks for very little value once again proving that the Fantasy League stops are not all peaches and cream.

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Round 1 in Morocco is in the books and there's some good news and some bad news.
First the good news: the last position on the leaderboard is no worse than fifth place.

The bad news: only four competitors scored any points and those grabbed only 10 points each. Richie Ramsey scored a Round 1 Top 5 for oldshanker, faldono1fan and Maverick. The clever pick of Phillip Price, also of the R1T5 Club, by oldparwin brought home the other points. Nobody chose either the low score by Damien McGrane at -7 or the worse score by Sam Hutsby at +12 for the round.

The most impressive action however was the withdrawal of Søren Hansen after 9 holes and a score of +13. That single-handedly dismissed four from having any chance of securing all 6 picks to make the cut after Round 2 and a few others just missed the chopping block by having Mr. Hansen as a reserve pick. Lucky them. Hopefully Round 2 will bring greater success to those on and off the course.

They finally got Round 2 into the books and lo and behold oldshanker is currently lapping the field. Using the classic method of being the only competitor to secure all 6 picks making the cut, he has a 30 point lead going into the weekend over 2nd place holder Maverick who is just returning to GCUK Fantasy League action following a month or so of R & R.

Once again the entire field failed to gather the low score and the worse score points available. And once again the action on the actual desert course is far superior to the action on the virtual deserted course of the Fantasy League regardless of the amount offered.

Did I really get 4/6 through the cut? The ET leaderboard was down for much of the day so I couldn't check but at one time it was looking like I'd do well to get 2 through the cut!

Excellent Davie. The honesty knows no bounds in the Fantasy League. Calling a point withdrawal on yourself is akin to calling a stroke penalty on yourself when nobody's looking. For your fine effort you will be deducted 5 whole points. You only had 3 make the cut. For some stupid reason I had Maybin making the cut for you.

The new news is that oldshanker has solidified his lead after Round 3 in Morocco. He as well six others chose Matteo Manassero as their means to grabbing Round 3 Top 10 points. There were 14 pro's who qualified with -3 or lower and not many others in the Fantasy League took advantage. With only the final round to be finished and not too many at oldshanker's heels he looks to breeze his way to victory Sunday afternoon in the warm spring winds of the Western Sahara.
