What more needs to be said? Many consider this tournament to be the unofficial start of the golf season. It is the first men's major for the GCUK Fantasy League. The invitations have been handed out, the patrons have been forewarned about the privileges of walking the sacred grounds, the grass has been painted greener, the sand has been made whiter and the water has been dyed a specific shade of blue.
Bonus special: this major will offer 30 bonus points for the low amateur for each round as well as 60 bonus points for the low scoring amateur of the tournament regardless if that person has made the cut or not. Only one amateur pick allowed. This is a special category and does not count against one's Category C selections though an amateur may also be one's Category C pick.
And no Masters Tournament is complete without its famous pimento cheese sandwiches being served to go along with the obligatory mint juleps, a 'very' Southern drink (recipe in tomorrow's edition)…
Pimento Cheese Sandwich
Makes 2 sandwiches
Ingredients :
4 oz. extra-sharp Vermont white or yellow cheddar
(1½ cups) 1.5 oz pimento - drained, finely chopped
(¼ cup) 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce
Salt to taste
4 slices of good whole-wheat bread
4 thin slices Vidalia or other sweet onion (optional)
1 cup watercress sprigs - tough stems discarded (optional)
Preparation:
Mash cheese pimento, mayonnaise and hot pepper sauce in small bowl with a fork until well combined. Season with salt to taste. Cover and chill 1 hour for flavors to blend. Spread pimento cheese evenly on bread. Top with onions and watercress sprigs (optional). Cut each sandwich and serve.
Eat and drink at one's own risk.

League Note: There will be a 3 event vacation for the GCUK Fantasy League following this event until the European Tour reconvenes on European soil for the Open de España at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, Seville, Spain from 3 - 6 May.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 - Inaugural Season - Event #14 _ Masters Tournament
Venice - Just to clarify, do we get to pick an amateur in addition to our normal picks or are we only eligible for the amateur bonus if we use one of our C picks on an amateur?

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 - Inaugural Season - Event #14 _ Masters Tournament
A) Tiger Woods, Hunter Mahan (Martin Kaymer)
B) keegan Bradley, Nick Watney (Sergio Garcia)
C) Gary Woodland, Johnson Wagner (Jon Byrd)
Had to think long and hard and wondered about the chances of Luke, Rory etc, but guessed many will be going down this road, so for the sake of either missing out completley or scoring the same as many, I opted for a different strategy this time. Especially after being mullered in the last couple of events.
Thanks Venice and if we do get an amatuer pick I'll have Patrick Cantlay.

Thanks for raising the point Davie. The amateur pick is an added selection and will not count against the Category C picks though one may also choose an amateur or two for their Category C picks as well.

Re: GolfChatUK Fantasy League 2012 - Inaugural Season - Event #14 _ Masters Tournament
Stolen recipes for mixing a mint julep, the unofficial drink of the Masters Tournament:
Classic Mint Julip:
4 fresh mint sprigs
2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 tsp powdered sugar
2 tsp water
Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a collins glass.
Fill the glass with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon.
Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig.
Serve with a straw.
Georgia Mint Julip:
1 tsp powdered sugar
1 splash water
1 1/2 oz brandy
1 oz peach brandy
mint leaves
Build in a collins glass and garnish with mint leaves.
Frozen Mint Julip:
2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 oz lemon juice
1 cup ice
1 oz sugar syrup
Blend everything except mint and pour. Garnish with mint sprigs.
Guaranteed to make one speak with a Southern drawl after a couple have been knocked down. Ya'll welcome.

I suppose this will mean Venice will now ignore my picks completely.....

Thanks for the update 1GG!
From espn.com:
"His agent, David Winkle at Hambric Sports Management, said Johnson first had back pain in January when he withdrew from the Humana Challenge, and played through minor pain the next six weeks.
"His back bothered him from time to time. He kind of played through the pain, but it was never crippling," Winkle said in a voicemail. "He rested it at Bay Hill, got back to working some last week, and tweaked it last week lifting a jet ski."
What's he doing lifting a jet ski especially since he'd been having back problems from the beginning of this year?!
And what's the real reason?

Like the many who have completed their first round ever in the Masters Tournament the GCUK Fantasy Leaguers played like a bunch of amateurs. And this is one of the few occasions where that is a good thing. No less than 10 chose low amateur for the day, Patrick Cantlay or Hideki Matsuyama, both of whom shot a credible -1. This is the first time this point category has been offered in League play and it dominated the fantasy proceedings.
However, there was one who destroyed the field while setting a record for leading the first round by the greatest margin as well as having received the most points for Round 1 for any tourney. Davie gathered 150 big ones in several ways: the only one to pick Lee Westwood from Category A who happens to be the first round leader on the course, choosing low amateur and having 3 picks make Round 1 Top 5 status.
But the 90 point lead going into Round 2 can't get too comfortable as the bonanza points awarded for making the cut looms large with another 150 points going to those that have all 6 picks making the weekend action in Augusta. There were also several classic collapses on the course for Round 1 that affected those whom all but counted the points on the leaderboard. It's best not to mention poor Mr. Stenson's name as a fine example of such fleeting glory.
And sticking with the Ol' Southern Porch Bar and Backdoor Kitchen theme:
Classic Georgia Pecan Pie recipe:
Original Recipe Yield:
1 - 9 inch deep dish pie
Ingredients:
3 egg whites
1 cup white sugar
14 saltine crackers, finely crushed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped pecans
7 fresh peaches - peeled, pitted and sliced
2 cups sweetened whipped cream
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
In a large glass or metal bowl, whip the egg whites until they can hold a peak.
Gradually sprinkle in the sugar, while continuing to whip the egg whites to stiff peaks.
Fold in saltines, vanilla, baking powder and pecans.
Spread evenly into an ungreased 9 inch deep dish pie plate.
Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove from the oven, and cool.
The crust will puff and crack as it cools.
When crust is completely cool, arrange sliced peaches over the top.
Cover with aluminum foil to protect their color until serving.
Top with sweetened whipped cream just before serving.

I assumed Mary's Pie & Ale House had a proper putting green in the back garden area adjacent to the tool shed. Those are the rumours anyway.

The 'no-cut parade' was popular at Augusta National with the Fantasy Leaguers hitting on all cylinders for Round 2 as ten made it through to the weekend with all 6 picks, good for 150 points each. That set a new league record for most contestants having a 6 for 6 perfect day for a round. Amazingly but unfortunately, the other 7 competitors each had 5 of 6 making the cut but good for only 75 points. Johnson Wagner was the main culprit for most not making the grade as he missed the cut by 4 strokes.
Despite the onslaught of scoring so far in the tourney, nobody chose Freddy Couples who had the best round of the day and also shares the lead with Jason Dufner at the halfway mark. Nobody also chose the worse round of the day by former Masters champ, Ben Crenshaw who fired a +11 at the board.
The amateurs were again an item for the second day in a row as three made the cut line: Hideki Matsuyama, Kelly Kraft and the man he beat in last year's U.S. Amateur Patrick Cantlay to take that title. And the three Matsuyama faithful: oldshanker, boyhyde and LadyPutt drew another 30 points as the new pride of Japan was the low amateur for the second day in a row.
Davie retained his large lead going into Round 3 action by 90 points over his closest rival, hogie. But with so many others having a record number of players remaining in the field, it's anyone's ball game... still.
And what would any respectable Augusta swamp crawling golf member be without being able to put
the still to good use for a refreshing post-round swig:
Watermelon-Peach Moonshine Brandy recipe:
Original Recipe Yield:
5 gallons
Ingredients:
1 1/4 large watermelon
10 peaches
1 1/4 cup chopped golden raisins
15 limes (juice only)
25 cups sugar
Water to make 5 gallon
Wine or distillers yeast
Directions:
Extract the juice from watermelon and peaches, saving pulp.
Boil pulp in five quarts of water for 1/2 hour then strain and add water to extracted juice.
Allow to cool to lukewarm then add water to make five gallons total and all
other ingredients except yeast to primary fermentation vessel.
Cover well with cloth and add yeast after 24 hours.
Stir daily for 1 week and strain off raisins.
Fit fermentation trap, and set aside for 4 weeks.
Above recipe was stolen from a bootlegger while running from the rev'nuers. Gotta go.

Gary Woodland looking certain to give some bonus points to lucky pickers. An 85 for +13. Almost makes Sandy Lyle look competitive.

Round 3 for the Masters Tourney was a topsy-turvy affair both on the course and in fantasyland. Leaders fell by the wayside, except for Davie who still holds a commanding 90 point lead going into the last day of action. Four are attempting to apply pressure and locked at 240 points so far: Meisce, Maverick, Redrage and hogie but will need some more collapses on the course to wear the green jacket.
The highest point grabber for the round was boyhyde who had two picks make the Round 3 Top 10 category as well as getting another 30 points from low amateur of the day, Hideki Matsuyama. That means that oldshanker and LadyPutt were also rewarded in kind equating to 90 total points received already from the man who's not going to take home a dime but much praise. Another worthy note is that not a single amateur entered has had the worse round of the day. On the opposite side of the coin, they haven't had the lowest round of the day either.
There was one withdrawal from the event and that was Gary Woodland. His action is going to affect a number of GCUK Fantasy League competitors who chose him but will be bitterly disappointed when the position points are handed out after the last ball drops Sunday afternoon. Stenson, Oosthuizen and Harrington brought home most of the bacon and other fried goodies for those feasting on Round 3 Top 10 'moving day' points.
It's only right that the rest of the gang don't go to bed hungry tonight before the big day.
A simple classic Southern dish will make sure of that:
Southern Fried Chicken recipe:
Original Recipe Yield:
6 servings
Ingredients:
1 (3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces
1 cup all-purpose flour
Salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
1 teaspoon paprika
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Directions:
Before seasoning and cooking chicken, place in a bath of ice water
and pour a liberal amount of salt in and let it sit.
Season chicken pieces with salt, pepper, and paprika.
Roll in flour.
Add 1/2 to 3/4 inch oil to a large, heavy skillet.
Heat to approximately 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
Place chicken pieces in hot oil.
Cover, and fry until golden, turning once, 15 to 20 minutes.
Drain on paper towels.
Finger lickin' good.

Could be a tough call and may even require intervention from Judge LP!
It seems that once someone withdraws from the Masters, all records of rounds completed are expunged from official leaderboards almost as if the person had never even existed!
All I could find was this quote from the CBS Sports website which seems to suggest that he did complete Rd3 with an 85 before retiring
Gary Woodland shot a back nine 45 after the wrist injury, posted 85 in his third round, and has since withdrawn from the Masters

Excellent suggestion, Davie. It would be appropriate for the League Judge to rule on a case involving an action by the all-male private club 'expunging' recorded scores to make everything appear 'pertty' as they like to say. Not sure we can get the bailiff to process the papers on Easter Sunday so we'll leave the current standings as is until further notice from the League Court.
fn1f, I'm in the same boat as you so hopefully we'll receive a favorable ruling from the 'hanging' Judge. Being tied for last, I could use all the help I can get.

Depending on the circumstances, peanut butter, cotton candy or whipped cream would be appropriate.

I'm not too sure there will be a favourable ruling from the League Judge for all of us foolish enough to pick Gary Woodland...the wise Judge had the good sense to only pick him as her reserve!

If it helps I posted twice about Woodlands 85 making sandy look competitive. It's posted on the Masters thread and here yesterday afternoon just after he completed his round.

It is an interesting dilemma for the Judge...does she do the right thing and award us our 30 points or deviously rule to her own benefit?

Then I'm placing my money behind your thread. Also heard through the grapevine about you having certain 'chamber door' privileges with the legal staff.

And to further turn the screw, if she would have chosen Gary Woodland as opposed to Johnson Wagner, who failed to make the cut, for her Category C pick she would have received the bonus points for having all six make the cut.

My team didn't have much puff to start with! Surely there must be some points awarded for failing to get any picks in the top 20?
