The GCUK Fantasy League lucky #13 event of the year is being held in the land of volcanos, grapes, citrus and olive trees and of course the fictitious Corleone family of 'The Godfather' fame. This is only the event's 2nd tournament on the European Tour with last year's inaugural winner, Raphaël Jacquelin, in the field to simply defend his title and hopefully not his honor ala La Famiglia way. There are only six pro's entered who have an OWGR ranking lower than 100 so it promises to be another mano a mano affair. Let's hope the tourney script doesn't start off like the movie script… or maybe so...

RULES

Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:

Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.

Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.

Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.

Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.

Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply.
Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.

Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.

Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.

All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Two is the number of Fantasy League competitors that made the grade for Round 1 and the rest might as well have been voted off the Island of Sicily. And it would be a much better fate than most would receive for not bringing home the goods. Jamie Donaldson was the lone contributor for boyhyde and Meisce having made Round 1 Top 5 for 10 big points. Everyone else is tied for 3rd but last. And true to form nobody chose either the low score or the worse score for the round.

Rumour has it that one of the head locals was getting a bit edgy with the lack of action in the GCUK Fantasy League event and thus refused to extend an invitation to the league competitors except for the 2 tied for first after Round 1 to a local wedding party adjacent to the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort:

Here's a glimpse of the party's opening scene as described in 'The Godfather':

A HIGH ANGLE of the CORLEONE MALL in bright daylight. There are at least five hundred guests filling the main courtyard and gardens. There is music and laughing and dancing and countless tables covered with food and wine.

DON CORLEONE stands at the Gate, flanked on either side by a son: FREDO and SONNY, all dressed in the formal attire of the wedding party. He warmly shakes the hands of BOYHYDE and MEISCE, squeezes the hands of the friends and guests, pinches the cheeks of the children, and makes them all welcome. They in turn carry with them gallons of homemade wine, cartons of freshly baked bread and pastries, and enormous trays of Italian delicacies.


Hopefully for their sake, the 2 new guests will be able to reciprocate with another good round.

What the GCUK Fantasy League has after the cuts have been made in Southern Sunny Sicily is more reminiscent of a funeral march than 'La Festa Siciliana.' The best a league competitor could do was selecting 4 of 6 making the cut and there were only four of them. The rest could barely keep up with the slow paced donkeys used to tote the deceased for such occasions.

And one was just plain dead… as in last place while setting a record in futility that can only be matched but not beaten: venice1 failed to advance a single player into the weekend. If there was a Q-School, he would likely not be extended an invitation much less a last request for a meal if headed to the gallows.

Meisce managed to retain his lead by a mere 5 points and it looks like it's going to be an old-fashioned 17 on 17 duel for the rights to hoist the trophy on Sunday afternoon. This is the kind of action the island is used to hosting throughout the centuries of being conquered but knowing full well that the inevitable vengeance is always on the table.

Well it looks like I can pick em a lot better than others never mind Venice you can take the weekend off on this one.

Nosebleed sure to develop from being this high up the leaderboard.

Did I really only get 2/6 through the cut? When I checked late afternoon I was looking to have 4 or 5 through!

Round 3 was a day of surprising movement on the leaderboard despite the tough scoring conditions in the Fantasy League. BlueCoverman took the lead on the strength of having three of his four selections reach the Round 3 Top 10 plateau. He'll have to hold off Davie and JDandfries among others to claim victory and don the laurel wreath.

Two thirds of the competitors managed to secure points with many riding the coat-tails of young Tom Lewis for Round 3 Top 10 status. The virtual shot of the day had to go to oldshanker, who has only one remaining contestant in the field and that just happens to be Mr. Lewis. Proving once again that the GCUK Fantasy League is about scraping for points with a desperate look in one's eyes.

But not as desperate as the men referred to from the following 'The Godfather' scene with Brando as Vito:

For the time there have been no reports of gambling that involved arguing among GCUK members (allegedly).
Scratched fenders are an entirely different matter.
