Confident or Sensible Empty Confident or Sensible

Post by Doc Wed Feb 20, 2013 8:47 pm

As I'm still going through a faze of bedding in what I learned under the pro, my approach shots are taking some thinking about. I know if I connect well I can hit the yardage and be close to target, but because I'm still not confident of getting the right connection every time I have to think .... do I play one club more knowing that I stand a chance of striking it well, and going long. Or do I go with the correct club, maybe not hit as well and be short. So the % game goes into play and I may opt for one more club and then hope I don't get it away 100%. Frustrating game when you try and think too much. Hope this makes sense by the way, and yes I do take into consideration the problems which come from being long or short depending on the hole. I have a 40% good strike rate at the moment, which means 6 out of 10 will not be as good ....... head banging.

Anyone else try to out think things or do normal people just select the right club and play what you're left with?

There's a quote in this month's Golf Digest which states:

One thing all great players do: They rarely take a full short-iron swing (a 3/4 swing is easier to control)

Scarpa I'm guessing that this is not tongue in cheek and a sensible tip. Cross Fingers

sensible tip, though i see how you could read it the other way. i find it far easier to strike the ball cleanly giving it 85-90% rather than 100%...and a heck of a lot easier that at 110%! the carry yardage info i store is based on flush strikes at about 90% power/speed rather than 100%. certainly improves my GIR stats too.

When I play with my mate he keeps saying to me 80%. So he has noticed when I swing easy I hit it better.

Mind you - easier said than done

That's cos there's that little voice inside your head GWR saying "just crank it up a little more, just look how good you're hitting it at the moment; add a little more and we'll be even better." Never, ever listen to that little bar steward Evil or Very Mad

Unfortunately thats what happens Grumpy .... there's always that extra few yards to be gained by hitting it harder Smile

Yeah, except those extra few yards always get you into the boondocks, umbala and other unpleasant places Confident or Sensible 3461234324

Unless I need to launch something stupidly high in the air to stop on a green with as much ability to take a nicely struck shot as the average motorway I go in soft and controlled. Usually a club more than the yardage demands up to about 170ish.
