Favourite Golfing moment - being at Hoylake for the final day in 06. First Open i'd been to. Turned up at about 7am not really knowing what you're meant to do at a golf tournament. I'm wandering around and a golf ball lands next to me. Down the fairway trots Jose Maria Olazabal. He says "good morning" and then hits a 4 iron into the green from about 6 feet in front of me. Just me, his caddy and him, no one else in sight. Brilliant!

Nice one! Bet you must have some great memories from some of those games. I never got past being watched by scouts at school. I think the problem was I went to boarding school in the south of England but lived in Scotland so made it a bit difficult to sign schoolboy forms.

Doc you played for Bielefield! Snap!

When I was based in Hameln I played 2 seasons with them, became a bit of a tracksuit soldier due to that, got lots of time of to train as a result. Highlight was playing part of a pre-season tour series againt Bayern, 1860 and Hannover and scoring in all 2 games! Even got to play against Hargreaves in the centre of the park the boy was a total athlete depsite his more recent injuries.

Had to stop when got posted away to 59 squadron so boxing took over as they were an always active unit so no time for football

Good man, sounds like a great time. My old man was a keeper in the army (a while before you!) and got moved from Berlin to Gibraltar to play football. I always thought if i was ever going to be in the forces i'd try and take that same route!!

Mav, D4S yes fantastic times and Mav will know what goes on when the boys are away playing. Obviously a good few years older than you Mav but I'll always remember half time in a round robin tournament in Hong Kong, where we were playing a local side Hong Kong Rangers that was full of top players from around the world who were guesting, Man Utd and Huddersfield. Me and Frank Worthington were sat in centre circle smoking and having a bottle of San Miguel, brilliant, no oranges for us, and no way you would have got away with it when you were in He wanted to know which were the best flesh pots that were not on the tourist route, so ended up taking him to a place where he almost fell for a ladyboy .... hillarious but he took it in good fun. The Man Utd players were a bit more professional, and kept to their hotel rooms

Hi Puligny - where in Hampshire/Dorset and where do you play? I used to live in Bournemouth and D4S plays at Broadstone so you are not alone. I also started playing golf in my early 40s so I'd have a sport to play in my old age!

LP hi. Yes I know D4s and we have a couple of rounds together each year. In Dorset I play at Remedy Oak though I live near Winchester and play in Hampshire also. I know people at Ferndown, Parkstone and Broadstone so I don't have a favourite!!!!!
It's funny, I always knew I would play golf sometime (when older) but just had never got round to it/had the time etc etc until forced by injuries which stopped me doing any of my other sports. Now find myself one of a legion of golfers who "wish I'd started sooner!"

I'm 1GrumpyGolfer purely because I don't get to play enough golf. Living in Pennsylvania means I don't get to enjoy year round golf.

I play at Country Club of the Poconos and hold a USGA handicap of 10 meaning I get to play off 12 because the course is pretty tough. I have a mixed bag of clubs; Taylormade driver, Titleist woods, Cobra hybrid, Wishon irons, Callaway and Taylormade wedges and an Odyssey putter.

Favourite course would probably be The Presidio in San Franscisco, CA. Had a reasonable game there, can't remember the course too much but came off wishing I could go back out there.

I also have the dubious pleasure and honour of running the winter eclectic competition. It started way back in the days of yore of graphite shafts and massive putters of 2010. The idea was to keep the golf boards from going quiet by encouraging everyone to play 8 rounds of golf over the winter. From those eight rounds your best score for each hole is cherry picked to give you the best ever round of golf. Your handicap is then added into the equation and some other jiggery pokery (patent pending) is included in the mix and I decide (judge's decision is final and all that) what your final score is.

After playing each round you're invited to regale us with tales of golfing brilliance and how you also managed to scupper a great round by losing a ball, 4 putting or playing carp on the "Tell us about your eclectic today" thread. Being technically challenged, or seeing as we have my brother Del Boy playing in it now, a Rodney I can't or won't link it. Golfing brilliance generally earns a bandito smiley (admins take note, purlease) next to your name and maybe a handicap revision (see judge's decision above)

A weekly (ish) leaderboard is updated by our good friend Davie. Currently scores show those who are under par and there are a few reasons why you might not appear at first:

You haven't started yet
You didn't submit your scores
You haven't played enough to get into negative numbers







Or
Your golfing inepitude means you're not really troubling the leaders

After all this joyful information you're either bored or can't wait to join in the fun. So how do you do this. PM or email the details of your course. I need:

Par for each hole
SI for each hole
SSS for tee boxes you will play
Handicap

Armed with this information I add you into the complicated whirly gig spreadsheet and post your scores.

If you want to a round to count, email, PM or post to Eclectic thread your intentions. This is to prevent "forgetting" to submit a bad round and retroactively adding in a great round. After said round email or PM your scores to me and then join in the tales of joy and woe. As you can see much joy and fun is had by all.
