While BlueCoverman was crowned King of the Cat C Choppers, 1GrumpyGolfer quietly went about repeating his 1-2-3 finish from last year to successfully defend the Hyundai Tournament of Champions title. Of the 18 GolfChatUK Fantasy League picks 4 did not score any finish points and 2 did not any points whatsoever; Davie had both of them and was always chasing. All six picks from 1GrumpyGolfer picked up finish points or final round bonus points to close out the opening event of 2014. SetupDetermines was also able to match this feat but his picks were not of the same calibre. LadyPutt had a low/worse round combo and a strong finish points haul to sneak past BlueCoverman to take the runners up spot. Mary_S had four picks finish in the points but she'd got off to a slow start and never really got going after that.
66 was the low score in the final round and 2 picks shot that number; Zach Johnson and Billy Horschel earned points for 1GrumpyGolfer and LadyPutt. In a surprising finish Derek Ernst did not put in another worse round performance instead Russell Henley and Scott Brown both shot 75. Henley earned points for 1GrumpyGolfer, LadyPutt, and SetupDetermines. Ernst had wrapped up last place and BlueCoverman thanks him for a stellar Cat C performance.

With over half the field among the Top 10 Low Round scores it was a points bonanza in round 3 and it's getting tight at the top of the GolfChatUK Fantasy League leaderboard. Everyone had at least three picks make it into the Top 10 Low Round scores, including Mary_S, although it shouldn't be that hard with only 30 players in the field to start with. Actually I hear there has been a correction to that count; it's 29 players and 1 chopper. The 1 chopper in question, almost never a doubt, is BlueCoverman's Derek Ernst; for the third time in a row he has the worst score and is the only player? over par this week.
Low round honours went to Brian Gay who demonstrated some great bouncebackability after having one of the worse rounds in the second round. This play shows that LPRPitis is still going strong in Hawaii. To get into the Top 10 Low Round scores you needed to shoot 69 or better and at one point last night Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson had the opportunity to move that mark to 68 on the 18th. Luckily for lots of GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers neither managed to do just that.
With BlueCoverman guaranteed the equivalent of an 11th place finish through Ernst everyone else seems to be playing catch up in the final round.

LPRPitis is still going strong and a doctor might need to be called for Mary_S as two of her reserves would have scored points in round 2. The conglomerate of Johnson and Johnson showed their might as the matched the low scores from round 1. The 66s from Dustin and Zach earned points for half of the GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers and left the rest ruing not giving either of them a full pick.
In round 2 two thirds of the field failed to beat par and this time six of them were over par. One of them was BlueCoverman's Derek Ernst. He is improving as his round was three shots better than round 1 but it was still the poorest; he now has an eight shot head start in the race for last place. Ernst was joined by two others who also shot 76; Brian Gay and John Merrick.
Lots of points are in offer in round 3 which has not been moved to accomodate other televised sports so that means a late night for those in the UK wanting to catch a glimpse of the leaders. Although not too late for BlueCoverman to check out his Cat C Chopper...

In this small field event GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers picked 24 of the 30 players in one form or another. One of the six that didn't make cut had one of the low scores of the day and another also made the Top 5 Low Round scores. LPRPitis also made a reappearance infecting Mary_S and to a lesser extent BlueCoverman. Before they start feeling too sorry for themselves the one positive for everyone is that they are off the mark in 2014.
The low score of the day was 66 and four players enjoyed their first round. Two of those in Jordan Spieth and Webb Simpson were full picks. They earned 20 points for all, bar Mary_S and 1GrumpyGolfer. Mary didn't pick either of them and 1GrumpyGolfer picked both of them. Another two picks made the Top 5 Low Round Scores; Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson earned 10 points for Davie, Mary_S, and 1GrumpyGolfer.
Only three players failed to beat par and two of them didn't even match it. In some fiendish plot BlueCoverman picked one of the two over par as the worse man. It's working so far as Derek Ernst comfortably took the worse round dishonours with a 79 and a three shot lead? for last place.
Round two tee times have been brought forward by three hours as NFL play off games take precedence over golf on the TV schedule.

Welcome back and GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers as it's time to wish you all a Happy New Year!
What used to be the PGA Tour’s kickoff event is the first event of 2014. As usual it will be taking place in the winter warmth of the Hawaiian resort of Kapalua. Hopefully poor weather that plagued this event in 2013 will not come into play this year. In its usual infinite wisdom, or continued play for TV ratings, the Tour has decided that the Monday finish should be attempted again. This is to coincide with the BCS National Championship game between the top two college teams of Florida State and Auburn.
30 of the 35 eligible players for the season opener will be in Hawaii. The notable absentees include; Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Phil Mickleson; just 4 of your top 5 in the OWGR. Graeme McDowell is the only other eligible player missing. This time the field only contains 6 of the top 20 players in the OWGR and a field size of 30 will ensure some bumper points pay offs to the top performers.
The field contains five of the eight multi win performers from the 2013 season: Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker, Dustin Johnson, and Harris English. We have two of the four major holders here and thirteen first time winners from 2013. Four players are in thanks to the change to a wrap-around season through current season wins: Jimmy Walker, Webb Simpson, Ryan Moore, and Chris Kirk. There is one former champion, Dustin Johnson, and two runners up in the field, Adam Scott and Martin Laird. Woody Austin is this year's oldest player less than a month away from his 50th birthday. Jordan Spieth is the youngest at 20.
The Plantation course measures out at more than 7400 yards and is a par 73. It’s perched on the slopes of the West Maui mountains and can be susceptible to the trade winds as demonstrated by last year's shortened event. The course record is shared by KJ Choi and Graeme McDowell at 62. There were some changes made to the seventh hole last year with more than 70 trees removed to bring the wind into play on one of the tougher holes on the Plantation course; that was a good idea wasn't it...
All in all it appears to be a good opener to 2014. This is a limited field, no cut event, so cut points will not be available but with points places going to 21 of the 30 man field it should mean a bumper points spread for GolfChatUK Fantasy Leaguers.

RULES
Picking players: Unless stated, pick a total of 6 players as follows:
Pick 2 players from each category, plus a reserve per category.
Event winner: The person with the most total points at the completion of each event will be declared the winner. In case of a tie, those involved will match-off each picks' final position score in descending order. i.e. Player A's best finish vs. Player B's best finish, Player A's 2nd best finish vs. Player B's 2nd best finish, etc... until one's pick finishes better than the other(s).
If there is a tie after all 6 picks have been matched against each other, those involved will be declared co-winners.
Order of Merit: The person with the most total points at the completion of the season will be declared the GolfChatUK Fantasy League Champion. If there is a tie for total points at the completion of the season, those involved will be declared Co-Champions.
Player Withdrawals: If you pick a player who withdraws during a tournament, that player will be treated as nil scoring. If a player withdraws before starting the tournament then your reserve will be put in that player's place. It is up to you to check that your players are in the starting field.
Holidays / Absences: If you will be absent for an upcoming event (e.g holidays) you may post the numbers on the most recent fantasy league event and the respective tournament(s) that apply. Example: Pick 2 players and 1 reserve from each category and the relative event number or name: Players 4 and 8, reserve 9 from Category A, players 1 and 7, reserve 3 from Category B, players 1 and 2, reserve 12 from Category C, Event #12.
Failure to submit picks: If you do not submit picks you will be awarded zero points.
Deadlines: Picks must ideally be submitted before the first drive is struck on the first day of the tournament. However, late picks submitted after the tournament has begun must be for players who have yet to start (or are not showing a score on europeantour.com, PGATour.com, etc.), and these will not be valid unless they are seconded by any other league member.
All fantasy league disputes and discrepancies will be considered by the League Judge: LadyPutt. All decisions made by the League Judge are final.

Cat A: Adam Scott & Dustin Johnson (res Zach Johnson)
Cat B: Jordan Spieth & Billy Horschel (res Boo Weekley)
Cat C: D.A. Points & Russell Henley (res Scott Brown)
I will be away for the next two events (Barbados but probably no golf as it is ridiculously expensive ) so please can you pick me numbers 2 and 7 in each category with number 13 as the reserve? I may not be back in time to pick for the Jan 23rd event either, so if I don't pick (I get back on Jan 22nd and am likely to be jet-lagged) please pick for me as before. Thanks!
Happy New Year and happy picking everyone!

Rumour has it that Dustin has pulled out of the Pro-am with a stiff one that Paulina is going to work her magic on later. Neck that is

I think you may have forgotten how to pick 'em Blue; Derek Ernst seems to be an inspired pick
I'm just jealous 'cos you're likely to get 10 points, maybe more, for him.

Thanks Grumps. Must admit the idea of picking the crap players in a no cut event in the hope of picking up bonus points for worse round and last place is not mine. I pinched it from a very intelligent friend from Pennsylvania...

That doesn't seem very sporting but it does sound like that someone is very clever perhaps so clever that he's forgotten more about fantasy league golf than some others will ever know.

Very unsporting indeed I agree and I did make that point to our esteemed lady judge in a previous event. However the decision on that occasion went the way of Pennsylvania, setting a precedent for such underhand tactics!
How are you Grumps?, hope that all is well and a Happy New Year to you. No golf for me this weekend, the recent heavy rain and storms have turned the mid-Essex golf courses into a muddy quagmire.

I wouldn't have said he was that crap; he has won on tour and his ranking isn't that bad in all fairness. I think we need a tongue in cheek smilie
Happy New Year, Blue, I'm doing well apart from f-f-f-freezing temperatures here, all of our forecasts seem to contain single digits. That's not so bad until you realise that we're in fahrenheit not celsius and that means were at least minus 10 in your money. I hope you dry out soon so you can get back out on the bog, I mean golf course. Golf is now something that apppears on the telly for me for a while.

So Blue's picking the biggest duffer in the group, fails to land the spoils....
Just goes to show, you've got to pick the winners, like the Grumpmeister.

Top work Grumps, a comfortable victory...must be some bonus points due for a 1-2-3 finish!
Hmm...for me it's back to the drawing board

You shouldn't feel too bad Blue. Your chopper was the highest scoring player in Cat C. It was the rest of your picks that let him down....

Got to say I enjoy the banter over the choppers .. but is there any mileage in a discussion over whether points for bad scorers is a good thing?

Jumping into your wummery :biglaugh:Is it fair that a guy that finishes in the top 20 gets less points than the guy that comes last? Should last place equal a 16-20 finish instead?
I think the reasons for points for poor performance was it gave you a chance if you had picked some choppers and kept you interested. Maybe points scoring opportunities should be reduced in a in limited field, no cut event. The round 3 top 10 low scores was over half the field in this instance. Food for thought?

Well done GG!
I think that there might be something in the method of picking by numbers - hasn't done LadyP any harm this week!
I like the choppers category - it gives an extra edge to the comp for those of us who are lousy pickers!
