What is it with the bloody French?
They get a warning about a potential downgrade in their rating from S&P and then start shouting that Britain are in a much worse state?
Oi! Surrender Monkeys! Man up and accept you're going down the toilet... We'll deal with it if it ever comes to be our turn (which it won't as we've clearly bribed the agencies to keep us at triple A )

The frogs will always squirm, but they were the ones who started the working time directive, and made sure that doctors etc were only allowed to do a certain amount of hours. This then meant they needed to employ more doctors, workers etc which took people off unemployment, but hey presto, chickens come home to roost, and proves that artifially engineering employment carries a massive burden on the state, and costs lots of wonga, which they now find they can't afford - toughtitty.
I'm more concerned about todays report that states the 'Thames Link' contract went to a German company, because their bank had a tripple A rating as apposed to Bombardier who are in the process of shedding 1,400 jobs because they didn't get the contract as their bank was only BB+ rated. How bad is that ...

They didn't want us in the 'common market' either. Monsieur de Gaulle dit 'NON'
And they sell us all their rubbish wine at the Calais hypermarkets. Try looking at the wine on the supermaket shelves in Beaune. Different world.
All to keep Christian and Eloise gainfully emplyed on their 5 acres of scrubland.

France is a beautiful country just a shame about the people! Maybe we should just invade them! The white flags will be out before breakfast! Can then ship all the frenchies off to some uncharted island off the antartic coast! Then rename france to England Mark2 but with better weather (name needs some thought!) Mind you then we'd be to close to ze germans! Bloody french!

The germans are easy to confuse... just ask them to translate 'fluffy' or tell them a 'toilet' joke. Worked for Basil and Blackadder

If all else fails against the germans at least we could always put our under pants on our heads, with a pencil up each nostril whilst chanting the word "wibble"!
Have to sau though having lived in germany and being fluent in german I love it out there

Even that is overrated, the best wines are now being produced in places like Oz and South Ehfrikaa. And cheese....give me a decent strong British cheddar any day.
And champers is for Henry's and Henrietta's

Agree and disagree there D4S. A British sparkler took one of the top honours at the International Wine Challenge last year, Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs, although it cannot call itself champoo of course! Mid range wines, yes maybe new world stuff, but the better stuff is still French in my book, both red and white. Cheese, yes of course , Cheddar is the finest of all cheeses bar none! But apart from a nice creamy Lancashire, then I'm afraid it's French again for me.

Agree mid range can't beat the new world. Fine wines, French for me. Sparkling or Champers doesn't do it for me but if you give a gift Champers will get you more brownie points than sparkling wine. Cheese - Blighty are on a par with French. Best of the best is tucking into a bit of Stilton in its pot then pouring a bottle of port in let it seep through then tuck in again. Lovely Jubbly

At one time French wine was in a class of its own, but not anymore, I think they are expensive and really not all that good for the price, to many other countries can produce wines just as good or in some cases, even better and they sell for a lot cheaper than the French ones.

Re: What is it with the bloody French?
It's not that long ago that the french vines suffered a massive disease which pretty much wiped out the entire grape industry in the space of a few years. They contacted the vineyards in the New World in order to obtain cuttings from the vines which were exported in the first instance. As a result the french vines are somewhat less mature than those from places such as Chile, California, Australia etc... As a result the french could be said to be somewhat less complex in both structure and fruit due to the relative lack of maturity when compared to say New Zealands Marlborough Valley and the surrounds.
That said one thing I do enjoy is a french wine every once in a while... Although I tend to prefer Spanish red and Kiwi white.

Re: What is it with the bloody French?
Had a hearty Rioja with my Lamb casserole tonight LJ. Marques de Valido and very nice it was too.
I'm not a wine 'snob' and enjoy wines from all over the world, but if I want to go up the top end (which I do not do very often), I will always look for French! Particularly Red Burgundy, something like a La Tache or Vosne Romanee Conti will always tickle my fancy if I can afford them.
But of course the balance of food to wine is important as well. Normally I wouldn't give you tuppence for a Sauternes or Barsac, but when you try a Chateau d'Yquem with Foie Gras, then heaven is not too far away.

Re: What is it with the bloody French?
Bearing in mind that I get most of my wine from Costco these days it can be pretty hard to go wrong (top notch stuff in there... Particularly their St Emilion range).
But at the moment.. I'm on the sake.

Sake - nice. I've been on a hazelnut liqueur this evening called frangelico. Tastes like nut brittle. Fantastic

Of course LJ you never take things too far!!
I am a big believer in buying wine from supermarkets. They have very knowledgable buying departments. So it is most unlikely to be a bit duff.

Not a fan of wine! Find it to be the singly most pointless acholic beverage.
Whiskeys and Brandys are far more my thing.
Sake LJ that stuff can be lethal, t'is lovely though
As an after dinner drink though I do find a Lemoncello very refreshing
