I'll start...

Below is a list of first names and clues. Once you have got the surnames see if you can get the link (don't necessarily need all the surnames).

1. Colin... Scottish golfer, Ryder Cup captain in 2010.
2. Taylor... American guitarist, member of pop punk band Paramore
3. Jennifer... American actor, best known for her role in comedy series ‘Friends’
4. Trevor... Retired Canadian Ice hockey player. Spent 17 seasons at Vancouver, over 2 spells.
5. Chris... English stand up comedian writer and actor. Starred in BBC comedy ‘The Thick Of It’
6. David... Fictional character in 'The Office'. Played by Ricky Gervais.
7. Joe... English singer, songwriter, born 1954
8. Mickey... Played in the MLB between 1939 and 1960. Died 2008.
9. James... Fourth president of the USA, hailed as ‘The Father of The Constitution’
10. Thomas... 7th Earl of Ormond, died 1515
11. Howard... English football referee, refereed the 2010 World Cup final
12. Gavin... Former Scotland Cricket Captain, played 38 ODI’s

3. Jennifer... Aniston

This is a great question! Hope I'm not disappointed with the answer but at the moment it's got me pulling out what is left of my hair

My contribution (as an old rocker) is that #2 is Taylor York

Is #12 right? was Hastings a cricketer too?

#7 can't be Joe Brown - much older than that. Joe Elliot perhaps?

Doesn't really help with the link though

I think 12 is Hamilton. Played for Yorkshire if I remember correctly.

Is 10 Seymour? There was certainly a Thomas Seymour around that time who lost his head (literally) for Elizabeth I

Good shout on #7 - about the right age I would guess. Still not helping with the link though!

Where are we up to?

Colin Montgomerie
Taylor York
Jennifer Aniston
Trevor ?
Chris Addison
David Brent
Joe Jackson?
Mickey ?
James Madison
Thomas Seymour?
Howard Webb
Gavin Hamilton?

From the wording of the OP it maybe isn't all surnames that link them but who knows!

Do know #4 and #7 but feel it's cheating as they played in pro leagues on this side of the pond:

#4 killed my beloved L.A. Kings on the ice many, many times. Retired not too long ago

#8: His baseball bat is in my used baseball bat collection. (store bought bats with the endorsed player's signature near the end of the barrel of the bat)

No 4. Treivr Linden! He had 2 stints with the Cannucks, as well as time at NY Islanders, Washington and. Montreal

No 8. Surely has to be Mickey Vernon spent a hell of a lot of years at washington before stints with cleveland, boston and pittsburgh if I'm right!

I love my yankee sports so think these are right

As for the link need to work on that

Cheers Venice.

Like I say I love my US sports and considering the amount of time I spend over there for my work its a good thing as I get to a lot of NFL, NHL, MLB and NBA games. Plan is to get to a superbowl and world series at some point dependant on whose playing!

So we have all the names just need the link! Only thing I can see so far is both first names and surnames can be used as a forename but I think that's a bit flakey

Re: Puzzle of the Day

Post by Maverick on Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:49 am

The only Thomas' I can think of from round that history period are Thomas Boleyn but don't remember the association of a 7th earl with him. There was another Thomas (at least think it was Thomas, may have been a James) but the surnamr Butler, something to do with Henry VII and Catherine of Aragon. Though I'm woking on a vague memory of history learned at school many years ago so I may be way off....

Still not seing the link though!

Not sure why but looking at the list of names something is swaying me towards american presidents. Could be coincidence but names like Linden, Hamilton, Madison are swaying me that way

My weird penchant for history and US sports has paid off here.

As for the US state not sure! I'm guessing there's a link somewhere! Tough call because Anniston and Linden would Sway me toward NY, yet Monty has links to Houston through his collegiate days! But then Vernon and Linded spent long periods in Washington!

Didn't howard webb ref a game for MLS? Houston v New england! Played in Boston remember as I was out in the states at the time!

I'm even more confused now!

May need to sleep on this

Have we got any ideas on this one now that we have got all the surnames? Going by ChrisGG's last clue could it be counties of one particular state? Without looking at Google I am going to have to guess - I know Texas has over 200 so I'll try that.

Alright time for the next one.

Like the previous one there is a list of first names and clues. Once you have got the surnames see if you can get the link (don't necessarily need all the surnames).

John... English multi-instrumentalist musician and Led Zeppelin bassist.

Rod... British singer-songwriter, musician.

Richard... Former US president, died 1994.

Andre... West Indian cricketer, made his international debut against Sri Lanka in 2010.

Allen... American etymologist and lexicographer, died 2002.

Darren... English footballer, has 10 u21 caps. Currently plays for Crystal Palace.

Brad... Canadian Ice hockey player, plays centre for New York Rangers.

Dwight... American lawyer and politician from Brookfield, Massachusetts. Represented Massachusetts in both the United States House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Died 1823.

Lee... English comedian, writer, actor and musician. Rose to fame during the 1990s.

Richard... American stand up comedian, actor and writer. Died 2005.

OK here's the surnames I've got so far

1. John... English multi-instrumentalist musician and Led Zeppelin bassist. (Paul) Jones

2. Rod... British singer-songwriter, musician. Stewart

3. Richard... Former US president, died 1994. Nixon

9. Lee... English comedian, writer, actor and musician. Rose to fame during the 1990s. Evans

I won't give my answer to the link yet but there is a (vague) connection with answer #4
