Well how will Jimmy Saville be remembered then? As an widely acclaimed philanthropist honoured for his charity efforts or a sexual predator of under age schoolgirls? And are ITV justified in airing this programme tomorrow night or is it unfair to speak ill of the dead?

I've no idea on how he will be viewed, at least until i've seen this programme but i don't see a problem in 'speaking ill of the dead'. If these allegations have some base to them i see no reason to avoid looking into them just because he's dead. All a bit pointless obviously in terms of bringing him to any justice but the truth is the truth.
I do wonder why all of these women have said nothing until after he died??

When I lived in Bournemouth, where he had a flat and also ran a nightclub, there were always rumours about him and his sexual preferences. It seems this programme will shed some light on the rumours and having seen a trailer of it last night, I see no reason to doubt some of the people giving their side of things (former colleagues like Paul Gambaccini and not the alleged victims, I hasten to add). The reason they waited, I assume is they were afraid to speak up while he was alive, as I would be if I were in their shoes.

MPB - don't know LP's reasons, but it is always difficult for women to report this kind of thing, as there is often the unspoken question of "were they asking for it"? I imagine this would have been even more prevelant back in the day, especially when the person involved was a famous public figure with a reputation for charity work.

Mary, oh i've no doubt coming forward must be difficult for any lady in this situation and i'm not trying to imply that these ladies aren't telling the truth. I just wonder why now, all these years later. What difference does it make that he's now dead? I can understand not wanting to say anything whilst maybe he was still the boss but that hasn't been the case for years and years

The programme does not show until tomorrow but it appears that his dubious preferences seem to have been fairly well known and for some length of time. What surprises me is that he was not taken to task at some stage, especially as under age girls were involved. No amount of charity fundraising could be used as an excuse for sweeping that under the carpet.

Not sure about raking over the ashes after death, as the recipient cannot answer for him or herself.

I'm not surprised though, the only thing that surprises me is the sex. I always thought it was boys who needed to be on their guard!

I seem to remember lots of tales about him while he was alive - but never from reputable sources

The story that seems to be going around now is that he threatened people with withdrawing his support for charities and causes such as Stoke Mandeville and Leeds General Hospital should he ever be accused publicly

Allegedly

*IF* true (and I stress "if") then that seems the worst kind of blackmail - I have to say that Esther Rantzen coming out and saying that she puts some credence in the allegations weighs quite heavily with me - although she is patron of Childline and so would be expected to take the hard line, she must've worked with and mixed with Jimmy a lot back in the day - and if she puts some credence into the claims, well ....

I see that the BBC are getting very edgy over this. A statement issued has said: 'We are horrified of allegations that anything of this sort could have happened at the BBC - or have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC'

The statement added that the police would be offered help in investigating the claims and full support would be provided 'to any lines of inquiry they wish to pursue'

A bit ironic that this should come out in the week that a young girl is abducted from outside her home in Wales and no doubt subjected to an ordeal that is too terrifying and repulsive to even think about. Cannot imagine how her parents are feeling right at this moment

Has anyone read the book (or seen the TV adaptation) Wire in the Blood by Val McDermid?

OK so her villain was an ex sports star rather than a washed up professional wrestler and DJ but it rings certain bells. Oh and the villain in the book was a killer, not just a molester but there are echos...

Davie - I've read the Val McDermid books. Hadn't realised the similarities until you mentioned them. I actually attended an author event a couple of weeks ago, where Val was speaking, and she explained how all her plot lines come from real-life experiences which she hears about.

Maybe the programme this evening will shed some light on why people are now speaking out about JS.

Interesting insight from Savile's autobiography.

Interesting Mary - I'd love to hear Val McD speak - love her books!

She must've had a pretty interesting life if her plots come from personal experiences!

Davie - LOL, they're not all her own personal experiences! It was very interesting that something fairly simple can set her off with the start of the plot for one of her books. She was in conversation with Mark Billingham - I've seen them twice, and very funny and well as interesting. Maybe Jacko was based on Jimmy! affraid

I'm just thankful that I never wrote in to Jim'll Fix It!

Didn't watch it myself but reaction I've heard from many people (on twitter, facebook etc) is that they believe it

Of course many of them are the type to think "oh well it said so in TV so it must be true" - they believe it without really thinking for themselves, but the general consensus seems to be that people believe the allegations

I watched it - I think all the main content had already been revealed in the newspapers anyway. It is rather damning that people are saying that it was an open secret, but nobody dared to do anything about it at the time. The abuse of the girls who were at a boarding school for emotionally disturbed young women would seem to indicate that he was very clever in chosing his prey.

I have a friend who has a very senior contact in the West Yorkshire police force. We had a chat about JS a few years ago, and he told me that its well known throughout the force that JS is a paedo and has offended many, many times over the years. When JS died we had the conversation again, and he mentioned that it wouldn't be too long before the stuff started to leak, especially as my mates contact was about to retire, and he had bury stuff about this paedophile, just like police down south and anywhewre else JS went. Amazing that a celebrity who wasn't that clever, and was a strange reclusive character anyway, was allowed to prey on kids for so many years, even though he and his mate Gary Glitter were in cahoots at times.

See what I don't understand is that it now appears that it was only me and a handful of others who didn't realise that Sir Jimmy Savile was not just a champion fundraiser and philanthropist honoured for his charity efforts.

He was in fact a serial abuser of young girls and an appalling sexual predator who had been committing offences over decades. Yet despite this apparent common knowledge he was awarded an OBE in 1971 and knighted in 1990.

Why was he never taken to task at sometime during this period? Surely there must have been one person in the police force (especially if senior officers were aware) or at Radio 1 who should have had the guts to bring his behaviour to public attention and subsequent arrest? Why was he so untouchable? I can't believe it was because of the amount of money raised and received by the charities that were benefitting

JS was seen in some circles as being a modern day mother Theresa I'm afraid. he was the most popular person on the BBC, given the OBE, knighted and was seen as a champion of the young and underprivalaged as well as the biggest charitable fundraiser in the country. His TV shows broke records at the time and he was seen as one of the main drivers of bringing disability to the fore, as well as being instrumental in the beginings of the paralympic movement because of the spine injury hospital he was funding. It seems that because Thatcher loved his shows, and the BBC were lapping up the veiwing figures, that he was allowed free reign to carry out his behaviour. he's been at it since the 60's and been allowed to get away with it. When it became apparent that he was being outed, BBC bosses got scared about the ramifications of the beebs reputation and carried on with the cover up. The Newsnight investigation was shelved and then it became obvious because the beeb had just finished a tv show which was due to be aired last january, a special honouring JS. The police forces from all over the country had been having complaints about him for over 30-years, but were all squashed from on high.

I find it amazing that our so called open country can be involved in 2 of the most serious cover ups in a 100-years, and all within a month. JS and Hillsborough both have a lot in common Evil or Very Mad

Jimmy Savile's headstone has been removed from the Scarborough cemetary at the request of his family.

The funeral directors who took the stone away said that they will grind off the inscriptions, break it up and it will be sent to landfill.

I guess it was different times back then, when abuse was not so widely recognised, or discussed (much easier to sweep it under the carpet). Can you imagine if any of those girls from the children's home had spoken out - they no doubt would have been chastised for "attention seeking"

Thankfully we are now living in more enlightened times.

Anyone seen the post by Doon on the dark side earlier today? Doon said that he used to play golf in the early 1970's on a regular basis with a DJ who worked for Radio 2 and he told him then all about Jimmy Savile.

What? The BBC knew for over 40 years and did nothing? Don't think that this story is going to go away anytime soon.

I do indeed Sonny Jim.

Personally I think his 'clunk click every trip' and 'let the train take the strain' have a lot to answer for as well! That is apart from describing the occasional predilection. affraid

Predilication or predation?

And please... no sonny jim jokes. That uncle thing with the name jim involved is now tainted until at least my generation has pegged it.

Watched the Panorama programme last night, it did seem strange that the BBC were investigating .......... the BBC. An interesting insight into the workings of the BBC though - I think heads will roll.

Seeing the clip of JS and Gary Glitter, making themselves comfortable on the beanbags and putting their arms around the young girls, was rather chilling with the hindsight of what we know now. I guess back then, they were famous men who smiled nicely at the children, so everybody knew no better than to trust them.

Entwhistle is making an arse of himself at the sub committee hearings. he's not really convincing at all. He was head of television and had scheduled 2 programmes to go out in celebration of Savile. He was told by the head of news that there may be trouble with his scheduling because of a newsnight investigation. So he did nothing, he never enquired about what was being investigated. Sorry mate if I could end up with egg on my face because of another tv show that I had control over, I would make sure I knew the scoop. The problem here though is that it was the BBC that was going to get flak because of its previous policies and management. It must be a cover up that forced newsnight to drop the show, but how naive were the beeb to think it wouldn't get out.

It is now being reported that the number of possible sexual abuse victims of Jimmy Savile is understood to be fast approaching 300!

Unbelievable amount of abuse, even more unbelievable that it remained unchecked for so long.
