Uber Europe
"Now then guys and gals", wot about Cleggy then? Took a strop and went awol yesterday. Boy, is he going to pay for that when next he enters the chamber.
And, as for Milliband ... what on earth were Labour thinking of when choosing this wee schoolboy as Leader? Still waiting for his answer as to whether or not he'd have signed up.

Re: Uber Europe
It's a pretty classic example of politics in this country.
Where there is no clear alternative to a course of action there will be those who by their absence indicate that they would probably have done the same thing but want to object for 'points gain' and those that criticise the action whilst not offering a solution.
I would have expected more from Clegg to be honest as he needs to be seen as the voice of moderation in order for this coalition approach to be viable in the future and from Labour... well... they won't be viable again for many years in my opinion.

Re: Uber Europe
Douglas Alexander was on the radio last night and when they asked him if Labour would have signed up he said "we would have negotiated differently to ensure other options......"
So, err, no then??

You sound a like a daily mail reader....
I don't mind the fact that dodgy dave has walked away from the negotiations, but he should have looked to build alliances with others who are unsure such as the Swedes and the Czechs

Re: Uber Europe
Chris, word is that he did try but don't forget they all want to be in the Euro and part of the decision making there, so as much as they may be allies of the UK on a historic political basis they're not going to burn bridges that will stitch them up in the Euro
Apparently Cameron tried to negotiate in order to obtain safeguards for the UK economy, but no nations were willing to give any ground at all, leaving him no option but to veto
To be fair, it would seem that he really didn't have much choice
What's the alternative?
He goes and says "we're in if you can promise the UK won't be disadvantaged...."
Answer - "no"
Cameron - "oh ok, no problem, we're in anyway"
Of course he can't do that and thank goodness

Re: Uber Europe
The problem is, that he hasn't actually vetoed anything. He simply walked away from negotiations. They will continue without the UK's input and tbh the only options I see are pulling out or accepting the new terms we've had no input in. And the latter wont happen. The thing I'm most worried about is what the Tory right will want to do the rights of workers when they are free from the EU's regulations/restrictions.

Re: Uber Europe
He has used his 'veto' Chris but granted it is a loose interpretation of the word 'veto'! I guess he's vetoed a 27 nation agreement but not much else that much is true

I can't see this being any worse than the EU regs

Re: Uber Europe
The truth is that Franfurt, Bonn and Paris all want their hands on the UK's financial sector. They want the kudos as being leaders in world finance, but also want it to give them the advantage of having it because of the Eoro issues.
Our problem as a country is that we allowed our manufacturing base to be outsourced. Service sector is now the biggest state earner, which is crazy, manuafacturing running in 2nd place followed by Financial services. We are just a country of call centre operations now, as Aerospace declines along with everything else. We're almost a 3rd world country thanks to politicians of all colours.

Frankfurt particularly as they have the European Central Bank there as well as headquartering a large number of German banks in their financial district.

Re: Uber Europe
There have been many good things to come out of Europe as far as business is concerned such as the Single Common Market, the free movement of capital and most of the tax rulings. These have helped remove HMRC unfairness for UK businesses.
The primary issues I have are with how subsidies are dished out and Human Rights legislation.
We should never ever give up control of budgets and taxation.

Think this was one of Cameron's concessions he wanted granted. The Polish weren't keen. German's were in favour, Swiss and French weren't fussed

I think the germans offered advice on how to do it... but they also mentioned that it all went wrong in the end for them.

Why, because I don't want the UK to be part of an Uber Europe? Wasn't it the tories who originally signed us up to a trading agreement in the first place? (Ted Heath?) Furthermore, didn't France veto the UK's entry on two previous occasions?
One of the reasons I don't want the UK (or Scotland for that matter) to be politically joined at the hip with Germany (in particular) is, partly, as a result of a converstation Mr Gael and I had with a newly retired german Brussels high heid yin at San Lorenzo a number of years ago. Having enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant round of golf with (as it turned out) Mr and Mrs Eurozone, Mr Eurozone turned the conversation to the EU and asked why we were so resistant to further integration. We quite honestly told him that surely a trading agreement was a sufficient enough bond between the nations and couldn't really see any merit in going down the united europe path. He became more and more animated and frustrated with our responses which, I would have to admit, were lacklustre at best! We did part friends but on thinking about it later on, made me realise that some things just don't change and whilst Merkel undoubtedly presents a much softer face of german politics, there are those in Germany who would view the UK's capitulation to a united europe as the ultimate prize they failed to win on two previous occasions.
Just for the record though, I am not Daily Mail reader nor have I ever been. My 'daily' is The Scotsman and when I occasionally purchase a 'Sunday' it will be The Sunday Times.

Incidentally does it really shock anyone they way the French are behaving?
They have a track record of collaborating with the germans.

Did you see the footage of him being dragged from that plane Gael ? I actually felt it was a bit unfair of the media as they picked some pics of him looking completely terrified and out of it after first showing him getting in the plane with a big smug grin on his face.
He is a complete tool though.

The problem with him Digs is that the underbelly of the tories is littered with these types. They just didn't have the balls to follow Farage

I don't recall seeing any pictures of him being "completely terrified". Shocked ... yes.
In any event, taking photos of people in distress is par for the course in today's world isn't it ... as does hacking into a family's grief. Does anyone believe this will stop because of an enquiry?

Doc, its both his problem that they wont come out and support his madcap beliefs and the Conservatives problem that they have people like him in their party either through selection or peerage or whatever.

Gael, dont get me wrong, Id be looking both if it had been me.
I do have hopes for this enquiry as it goes, and as people are currently serving jail time for phone hacking (hopefully with more to follow) I think journalists will certainly think twice before they go down that path again.
But there will always be a gutter press to fee the hunger of the public who demand it.

Fair enough Diggers.
Re Farage's politics ... you have to admit though, he stands as testament to the democratic standard we each of us value in the UK.
