Obama.......a damp squib ? Empty Obama.......a damp squib ?

Post by diggers Tue Jan 10, 2012 11:27 pm

Just wondered what people thought of his term in office. I have to say for me it has been a big disapointment. Seems to have been a triumph of style over any real substance or game plan. Where he to lose the next election it would be a real struggle to think of him leaving any kind of legacy whatsoever. He may of course get another term but if he does you'd have to attribute that to the current weakness of the Republican candidates and the divisions within their party.
But why has Obama been so static for want of a better word, has be been afraid of being labelled a radical and giving fuel to his more extreme critics ? Or is he simply just somnething of an empty vessel. It could well be as simple as that I guess.

I'd love to see a UK v USA political debate. I reckon the US politicians would get hammered as British politics is a bit more substance than the soundbites and image of the US scene. Obviously Milliband wouldn't be involved though.

I reckon Obama has been steady but unspectacular (which to me is a good thing)

His term has seen the global financial crisis which America seems to be slowly crawling its way out of, plus a shedload of foreign affair matters including the Arab Spring. One could say that he has handled them pretty well by seemingly taking a back seat while still overseeing matters - particularly Libya.

His term has seen the end of Sadam, Gadaffi and Bin Laden - hard to know how much of that was down to him directly, but his term will be remembered for that.

I think he's handled things pretty well and has been relatively gaffe-free. One wonders how Bush or some of the current Republican goons would have handled some of the above matters

I think he should have been a little more hardnosed. Particularly with Iran and France. Both places should have been invaded by now.

I think the end of Saddam was some 3 years before Obama's term started

I think we should encourage the US into a further spending spiral. The UK government should fund the US houseowners into spending a huge amount thus increasing the US deficit. We should then call these debts in such a way as we can nick the good states back from them and leave the US with just the crappy marshland like Alabama and reintroduce the imperial rule of the US.

And then we should hunt down anyone related to those involved in the revolution and throw them in boston harbour.

Hell was it really that long ago?? When I wrote it I was wondering if it was during Obama's time but didn't think it was that much before! The other points stand though

Im not sure he had much to do with Gaddafi, in fact America keeping predominantly out for once may have been a good thing. I dont think American foreign policy has led to any of the interesting events/changes we have seen in the middle east lately, far from it to be honest.
But I guess I was talking more on the domestic front. His rating has been pretty low for the past two years, he has a recent revival as the unemployment figures had a bit of an unexpected boost but his figures are down again even from December. I think the general feeling in the states is that he has been a disapointment.

I'm sure American largely staying out of Libya WAS a good thing - what I was trying to say was I thought it was Obama's influence that made t hem stay out of it (superficially anyway - anyone who thinks they had no input at all is naive at best)

Davie Im pretty sure there would have been a revolution in the USA had they gone in with any kind of ground forces. They are in the middle of a withdrawl from Iraq, it wouldnt have washed to go into Libya. Probably the easiest decision of his term.

A debate between Obama and Milliband? Could be a cure for insomnia.

With the caveat that we have to wait to see how things turn out in Libya (it is still a tribal culture after all), at least 'the west' employed a few smarts this time around in waiting to be asked for help and then only by providing a support role.

Aren't the yanks now aiming their firepower in a more westerly direction now by moving most of their carriers to the Pacific? Not the japanese this time but perhaps the chinese?

I always remember his 'strap-line' going into the election 'yes we can'. Obvious that he couldn't though. Yes he had a big fight to get his much watered down medicare bill through, but has struggled in both houses getting anything passed. His government has been tied in knots because he doesn't have a mandate in the senate and it was a 12th hour thing to even get his budget through. Ineffective at best i would say, and after watching a TV programme about the collapse of Wall Street and the banking sector, it turns out that Obama has filled his cabinet with many of the shysters who caused the banking collapse. many of their mates should be prosecuted and in jail, and having their huge illegal wealth seized, but its not going to happen. So one his the head of the federal reserve, another is in effect the finance minister or chancellor, another one runs defence, housing etc, etc, etc.
